Taco salad has always been one of my favorite meals, I could eat it every night. Josh gets a little bored with taco salad though. I think it’s the salad thing. He never complains, but I can tell he isn’t thrilled when I say taco salad is on the dinner menu:) If I tell him we are having Taco Salad with Homemade Tortilla Bowls, he gets excited. It’s amazing what a simple Homemade Tortilla Bowl can do! These bowls are magic!

So how do you make these fancy schmancy bowls? It’s really easy, I promise. All you need are burrito sized flour tortillas, cooking spray, and oven safe bowls. Place the tortillas in greased oven safe bowls and bake them until crispy! They will only take about 15 minutes to crisp up.

And if you want to make the tortilla bowls extra special, you can add a little cheese! Sprinkle shredded cheese in the center of the bowls a few minutes before the bowls are done baking. The cheese gets nice and melted. No wonder Josh loves these bowls so much. Look at that cheesy goodness!

We fill our tortilla bowls with our favorite taco salad fixins’! Our favorites include: lettuce, black beans, tomato, green onion, cilantro, shredded cheese, and avocado. I also like to add a big dollop of Creamy Avocado Dip for the dressing. Go wild and add your favorite taco salad toppings. We always go the vegetarian route, but you can add chicken, beef, or pork!

  1. I just love making these taco bowls for my family! I feel like I get more out of the salad than a burrito. Beautiful salad!

  2. I love taco salads and these bowls look absolutely perfect. I do like the idea of putting some cheese in the bottom and letting it melt. My favorite toppings would have to include refried beans and a little seasoned beef.

  3. I usually just crush up a couple taco shells for the base of my taco salad, I love this idea so much more!

  4. I always wondered how to make those awesome tortilla bowls! This salad looks so good and fun to eat…love that I can eat the whole thing! (bowl included!)

  5. Weird, I almost made these last night but I wasn’t feeling confident that the tortilla bowls would turn out so I just went with burritos. I’m definitely trying these out on the next taco night!

  6. Oooh that creamy avocado dressing looks like the perfect combo of guacamole and sour cream. I’ll definately be replacing that for the guac and sour cream next time we have mexican because I alway feel like I’m over doing the sauces when I use both! And the tortilla bowls with the cheese in the bottom is brilliant!!

  7. so so delicious. there is this place in Jersey I go to and they make the best tortilla bowls, of course it’s deep fried, and I tell myself I won’t eat the bowl and then I eat the whole thing and the salad. Sigh! Need to bake a bowl soon. ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. What a great idea for jazzing up weeknight meals! Absolutely love this, Maria. Pinned!

  9. Anything in an edible bowl is a win in my book! And I loved that you sprinkled cheese in the bottom of this tortilla bowl. It’s like eating a giant nacho! : ) Thanks for the inspiration!

  10. I’ve gotta try this. It looks amazing and delicious! I’ve never made tortilla bowls before!

  11. These would be perfect to serve to a crowd at a dinner party with a spread of fixins’! Love the homemade tortilla bowl and your creamy avocado dressing!

  12. I made these for ‘date night’ & added some minced chicken that I added a few spices to – the hubs & I LOVED it! Will definitely be making this again ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks Maria & Josh!

  13. I am a master controller @ PBS. I have watched dozens of food programs over my lengthy career
One of the most interesting I’ve seen recently was hosted by Joel Fuhrman, MD, whose primary directive is that we all should “CONSIDER OUR SALAD THE ENTREE” of our meal.

Thus I fully support your inclusion of the recipe for the salads in a tortilla.
At the same time, I prefer whole wheat tortillas, because of their higher fiber content.

  14. I love this! These would be a great lunch idea for the kids. They would totally get into the fact they could eat the bowl. Not to mention dip it as well:)

  15. Since I’ve been eating gluten/wheat free for ten years and not eating corn, I’m going to make these taco bowls using almond flour tortillas!

  16. 5 stars
Delicious! I had to make a few changes: my bowls are not oven safe to 375ยบ so I lined one with foil, put in a tortilla, removed the foil “bowl” and reshaped it gently so the bowl was a bit wider and more scalloped, less folded on itself. (I used soft taco size tortillas as they fit my bowl. ) I did this for 4 tortillas. I baked them in the foil as directed. They came out perfect! With the suggested fillings and others (Spanish rice and Cuban-style black beans), we had a delicious dinner. I appreciate the versatility of such a meal, the ease of preparation, and the much more delicious taste of homemade. Thanks.

    1. My son wants tortilla bowls for his taco salad he is making and we do not have oven safe bowls and cupcake pans seemed too small! Thank you for sharing the idea about the foil bowls!! Genius!!
We will be making these soon!!
