Pin ItWhen I was in junior high, I was a candy bar addict. I ate one every single day after school before basketball practice. I don’t know why I thought that was a good idea…the candy bar before practice or me playing basketball, ha! I eventually retired my jersey and stuck to cheerleading. I am much better at yelling from the sidelines:)
Anyways, our junior high office sold candy after school and the second the bell rang, I would race to purchase my candy bar. I was always starving after school. I don’t think my dad knew of my candy addiction. I am sure he thought I was using my money to purchase healthier snacks for practice:) Shhh, let’s not tell him and let’s hope he isn’t reading this.
One of my favorite candy bars was a Whatchamacallit. Do you guys remember those candy bars? I don’t even know if they still make them because I haven’t had one since junior high, but I do remember loving the crispy chocolate peanut butter candy bar. They were so good.
Well, the other day I was flipping through my friend Mary’s new cookbook, The Weeknight Dinner Cookbook, and saw a recipe for Crunchy No-Bake Chocolate Peanut Butter Bars. I immediately made them because I am a sucker for chocolate and peanut butter and I was hoping they would taste like a Whatchamacallit. Guess what? They DO taste like my favorite candy bar, but I think they are even better! YAY!
You only need FIVE ingredients to make the bars and I had all of the ingredients in my kitchen. I love that these bars are no-bake! You combine chocolate chips, peanut butter, honey, and butter in a microwave safe bowl and melt. Stir together and add cornflakes. They are the secret ingredient to creating the crisp and crunch!
Chill the bars until solid, but make sure you lick the bowl while they are chilling. You will want a taste of what’s to come:)
Cut into bars and enjoy! The bars will keep in the fridge for up to two weeks. These easy no-bake bars are a great treat to have around at all times. Whenever I need a sweet fix, I can turn to my trusty container of Crunchy No-Bake Chocolate Peanut Bars. They remind me of my good old junior high days! I am so glad I can make my favorite candy bar at home!
And make sure you check out The Weeknight Dinner Cookbook. It is filled with simple, family-friendly recipes that are easy to whip up during the week. Plus, there is a chapter all about sweet treats. Of course, I made a dessert in a book about dinners…ha! I guess I am still a junior high candy addict at heart.

These look like a sexed up, 100% better version of chocolate crispy cakes that I used to make as a kid with Frosties and melted chocolate. Definitely need to make these some time!
These look AWESOME!! I really have to try these soon!
These sound pretty good – and I have Mary’s cookbook – I can’t decide if I want to keep it for me or if I want to give it to my future niece in law – lol – I might just have to get her a new copy…..I don’t usually do “no bake” items but for this item – yeah I’ll do it1
Glad you are enjoying Mary’s book! It’s a good one!
Ha ha! Teenager eating astounds me. I would occasionally go buy myself a thing of Little Caesar’s crazy bread with red sauce and eat the whole bag. It makes me sweat now just thinking about it.
These look wonderfully easy, and I always loved Whatchamacallit, too, so I’ll have to give these a bash sometime.
I wish my metabolism was still the same…ha!
Have you tried crunchy peanut butter?
Crunchy PB would be good too!
Perfect back to school treat!
they look awesome and I have everything I need to make a batch today! high school eating scares me, I used to make those English muffin pizza’s and thought they were the best thing ever. ugh. LOL btw, Walmart sells Whatchamacalit bars! 🙂
Good to know! Thank you!
hey girl this looks so good! It’s right up my alley. I have also loved candy bars and whatamacallit’s to! They do still make those! yummy!
I need to find them!
I also loved Whatchamacallit candy bars but have not had one in years! Loving these chocolate peanut butter bars! I just so happen to have half a box of corn flakes in the pantry, and there is no doubt as to its fate now that I’ve read this recipe. Delish!
I hope you like them!
Ha! Love this post! They do still make them but they are hard to find! I buy a case of them every summer when we are in Hershey as they are mine and my son’s favorite!
I love that you buy a case. They are so good!
These look amazing! I’m up for anything with peanut butter and chocolate. I’m not allowed to have butter, any suggestions on a replacement? coconut oil maybe? thanks.
Coconut oil would work well! Enjoy!
My boys would absolutely flip for these!
These bars look great for Halloween!!
Funny…I have this book checked out from the library and I made these. I didn’t have Corn Flakes so I used chocolate cocoa crisps. They were amazing. This is a great easy recipe!!
I am thrilled that you’re enjoying the cookbook, Maria! These chocolate bars are so easy to make and I can never resist just one more. Your photos are making me want to make them again right now! Thanks so much!
i can’t believe how easy these are to make!
I made these last night to celebrate my daughter’s 1st adoption day. I added sprinkles to make them so more festive. They were so easy and so good.
Yay, no extra sugar. I hate to put sugar in anything. Please put more recipes in your posts. Thank You.
Genius!!!!!
These look heavenly!
Could Rice Krispies replace the corn flakes?
Yes!
I just discovered your post for these yummy looking bars.
I am making them tomorrow!
I was so excited for these. They seemed like a great use up of some odds and ends in my pantry, and I loved that they weren’t very difficult or time consuming so my toddler could help. However, I was not a fan. The texture to me was like biting into a stick of butter with cornflakes in it. Even after setting in the refrigerator overnight. I think if I made these again I’d cut back the butter by half. My husband likes them though, so he saved them from going straight in the trash can.
OMG I am Canadian and was in Phoenix three or for years ago and had my first whatyamacallit bar and love love loved them but could not get them in Canada :(. So if these taste like those I will feel like I’m in heaven!
I got rave reviews for these. I used rice krispies as that was what I had on hand. Super easy to make! Thanks for the recipe!
Glad you liked the recipe!
I made these with 70% dark chocolate chips, crunchy peanut butter and krispies…they are too good. I better give some away. Like to my constantly hungry brother! By they way, grape seed oil is a good replacement for regular butter since it doesn’t have a specific taste to it like coconut butter does.
But I do love real butter too.
I’m going to try these with sugar free honey and sugar free chocolate chips! Thank you!
I have made these with crispy rice cereal and milk choc chips ( what I had in the house) and everyone who had them LOVED them. At least 10 people asked for the recipe. One friend tried them with corn flakes and the crispy rice was preferred. We also tried with crushed ridged potato chips (good as well) and I want to try this with crushed pretzels to get the sweet/salt combo.
Lastly-great for holiday giving. Will be using mini muffin tins/liners for those.
Can you freeze these?
Yes!
I didn’t have the cereal on hand, but I did have oatmeal. Easier recipe for no bake cookies than the one I have been using. And I used 60% cocoa chips. Wonderful taste!!
Glad you liked the bars.
I made these for Christmas last week & my whole family loved them! I didn’t have plain corn flakes so I used Honey Bunches of Oats cereal & they were delicious! Thanks for the great (and super easy) recipe!
These are so good!
You should show making the the food and not just the end product!
Definitely going to make some this weekend!
Is it possible to substitute cheerios for corn flakes
I just made these and love them! I mixed in some heath toffee bits (about 1/2 cup) and they really added an extra wow! I didn’t have corn flakes so I used rice krispies and they worked fine.
These bars are delicious, thank you. Could they be made ahead of time and could they be frozen?
Thanks.y
Do you serve room temperature or cold?
Maria, Do you think I could substitute homemade granola for cornflakes? We aren’t cereal eaters here, just 2 old fogies! Thanks!
Wayyyyyyyyy too sweet. Even my kids, all of whom have a sweet tooth, said these were too sweet. Sorry 🙁
Trying to avoid dairy. Can I substitute coconut oil or peanut oil?
Can u use chocolate almond bark in place of the chocolate chips if u don’t have none?
Any suggestions to make this non fairly friendly? Looks delish but need to make some mods for family allergies.
they look awesome.. going to make this weekend. and they do still have Whatchamacalit bars, I think I’ve seen them at Cracker Barrel.
It tasted phenomenal. I LOVED Making it
Does it matter what kind of peanut butter? Can you use natural peanut butter?
Does anyone know the nutrition information? Thanks!
what can I sub for corn flakes? What about crushed cheerios?
Crispy rice cereal works well. Cheerios might work too, I haven’t tried them.
I made these for my son and DIL! They had a baby several weeks ago and I’ve been making food for them. These were quick and easy and tasted great! I love your recipes and bought your cookbook during quarantine – I’ve cooked my way through many of the recipes! ❤️
Do I grease the dish?
I really enjoy all your recipes, and your activities you share. I saw your pictures of you and your family. Very nice looking family! It’s nice to put a face to the name. Thanks again!
