A Simple, Fresh Butter Lettuce Salad for Any Meal
This butter lettuce salad is one of my go-to recipes when I want something fresh, light, and effortless. It’s made with tender butter lettuce, crisp vegetables, creamy avocado, and a bright lemon vinaigrette that ties everything together.
I like to think of this as my everyday house salad—the kind you can serve with just about anything. It comes together in minutes, but still feels special enough for guests, which is why I make it so often.
Sometimes I’ll even add homemade croutons for a little extra crunch. It’s simple, beautiful, and full of fresh flavor.
This salad works as a side dish for almost any meal, but it’s also light enough to enjoy on its own for lunch, especially in the spring and summer when you want something crisp and refreshing.
Why This Butter Lettuce Salad Works
Butter lettuce is naturally soft and delicate, which makes it the perfect base for a light vinaigrette. Crisp cucumbers and radishes add freshness and crunch, while creamy avocado brings balance and richness.
The lemon dressing keeps everything bright and clean without overpowering the greens. It’s a simple formula, but that’s exactly what makes it work so well, you get texture, freshness, and flavor in every bite.
This is the kind of salad that fits into almost any meal: grilled chicken, fish, pasta, or an easy weeknight dinner.
Ingredients (with Helpful Notes)

For the Salad:
- Butter lettuce– wash and dry the lettuce before using. You can plate the large lettuce leaves or give them a rough chop.
- Radishes– thinly sliced.
- Cucumbers– I like Persian cucumbers for this salad, but English or regular cucumbers will work too.
- Avocado– Avocado slices are pretty, but you can chop the avocado into pieces.
- Parmesan cheese– buy a nice wedge of Parmesan cheese and freshly grate it over the salad.
- Chives– finely chopped.
For the Dressing:
- Olive oil– avocado oil also works well.
- Lemon juice– always use fresh lemons!
- Vinegar– golden balsamic vinegar or champagne vinegar are my favorite. If you can’t find them, apple cider or red wine vinegar will work.
- Honey– to balance out the vinegar and lemon juice. Pure maple syrup will also work.
- Garlic– I love adding garlic to dressings.
- Dijon mustard– the mustard acts as an emulsifying agent and helps the oil and vinegar stay together.
How to Make Butter Lettuce Salad
Gently wash and dry the butter lettuce, then tear or leave the leaves whole depending on your preference. Add them to a large serving bowl along with cucumber, radish, avocado, and any other fresh vegetables.
In a small bowl or jar, whisk together the lemon vinaigrette until well combined. Drizzle the dressing over the salad and gently toss so the delicate leaves stay intact.
Serve immediately for the best texture and flavor.
Tips for the Best Butter Lettuce Salad
- Treat butter lettuce gently—it’s delicate. I like to toss it with my hands instead of tongs so the leaves stay beautiful and intact.
- Dry your lettuce really well. This is one of those small steps that makes a big difference. If it’s too wet, the dressing just slides off instead of clinging to every bite.
- Add the avocado right before serving. It keeps everything creamy and fresh instead of getting soft or browned.
- Go easy on the dressing. This salad is meant to feel light and fresh—not weighed down. Start with less, then add more if you need it.
- Chill your greens if you have time. Cold, crisp lettuce makes this salad taste even more refreshing—almost like it came from a restaurant.
- Taste as you go. A squeeze of lemon or pinch of salt at the end can completely wake everything up.
Storing Tips
- If the salad is already dressed and tossed, I recommend eating it the same day for best results.
- Butter lettuce is highly perishable so make sure you use it as soon as possible after purchasing it from the grocery store.
- You can keep the dressing in a jar or airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.

Butter lettuce is a soft, tender lettuce with a mild flavor and delicate texture, often used in fresh salads and lettuce wraps.
Yes, but store ingredients separately and add dressing and avocado just before serving.
Wrap it in paper towels and store it in a sealed container in the fridge to prevent excess moisture.
Light vinaigrettes like lemon, balsamic, or simple olive oil-based dressings work best.

Really tasty. Complex harmonious flavors. Sometimes I add some cilantro too.
Oooh, nice!
Great salad. Made exactly as described and the combination of flavors, crunch, and cheese was delicious. I’m not one for radishes but they really complimented this salad!
I am so glad you loved it. So fresh!
This salad was so light and delicious. The dressing is perfect. A wonderful addition to our Easter meal. I had couple cooked slices of bacon and I chopped those and it made a perfect salad topping. Thank you for your creative and healthy recipes!

This was wonderful! We used Little Gem lettuce as that’s what we are growing in the garden, it worked perfectly. Thank you!

I loved this salad, particularly the dressing so much that I made it twice to eat for lunch this week! Very versatile. Thanks for getting me to eat my greens!
One of my favorite salads!
I always use a recipe as a jumping-off point. Here, I substituted sliced red onion for radish; white win vinegar because it’s lighter than red wine and this is a light salad; doubled the lemon juice and garlic. I think this may be the best salad I’ve ever had. Certainly the lightest.
Oh nice! Thanks for sharing!
Wonderful recipe I had these ingredients from my farm box. I only substituted shallots for the garlic and received many compliments on this salad. Make it many times.
Oh nice!! I am so glad you love this one!
Thanks for all the wonderful recipes, love reading though them! I hope to be free one of these days❣️
