Easy Oreo Balls Recipe

How to Make Oreo Balls

Oreo balls are fun, easy to make, and will remind you of a chocolate truffle, but instead of a chocolate filling, you get a rich, decadent Oreo cream cheese filling. Oreo truffles are insanely delicious! Here are a few tips for making the perfect Oreo truffles.

  • Use the whole Oreo cookie, crisp chocolate cookie and white filling.
  • Place the cookies in a food processor and pulse until you have small cookie crumbs. Make sure there are no big cookie pieces.
  • Make sure your cream cheese is soft. If it is too cold, it won’t mix into the Oreo crumbs easily.
  • Use a mixer to combine the Oreo crumbs and cream cheese. I like to use my stand mixer, but a hand mixer works well too.
  • Roll the Oreo cream cheese mixture into small balls and place on a baking sheet or tray that has been lined with parchment paper or wax paper. Freeze the balls for 15 minutes. You MUST freeze them so you can dip them in chocolate. If you don’t, you will have a mess.
  • Melt the chocolate wafers in the microwave in a small microwave safe bowl. Follow the instructions on the package. You can also melt the chocolate using a double boiler on the stovetop. You can use candy coating or almond bark too. Chocolate chips don’t work as well because you want a thicker coating to cover the Oreo balls. I like to do a mix of chocolate and white chocolate. You can do just one chocolate if you wish.
  • Dip the balls into the melted chocolate, making sure the balls are completely covered. I like to use a fork to lift them out of the chocolate, then I shake from side to side to remove the excess chocolate.
  • Place the Oreo balls back on the lined baking sheet or tray. You can decorate the tops with a drizzle of extra chocolate, crushed Oreos, sprinkles, crushed peppermint, or chopped nuts. Or you can leave them plain!
  • When they are all dipped and decorated, place the baking sheet or tray in the refrigerator and chill for at least an hour.

How to Store

Make sure you store the Oreo balls in an airtight container in the refrigerator. If you leave them on the counter, the chocolate will get soft. You want to make sure they are chilled until ready to serve.

The Oreo balls will keep in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks. You can also freeze the Oreo balls for up to 2 months. If you are going to stack the Oreo balls, make sure you put parchment paper or wax paper in between the balls.

Instructions

  • Place Oreo cookies in a food processor. Pulse until they are fine cookie crumbs.
  • Using a stand mixer or hand mixer, beat the cream cheese until it is smooth, about 1 minute. Add the Oreo cookie crumbs and mix until well combined.
  • Roll the Oreo mixture into small balls and place on a baking sheet or tray that has been lined with parchment paper or wax paper. Freeze the Oreo balls for 15 minutes.
  • Place the chocolate wafers (or candy coating) in a small microwave safe bowl. Place the white chocolate wafers (or candy coating) in a separate small microwave safe bowl. Melt according to instructions on packaging.
  • Remove the balls from the freezer and dip the balls into the melted chocolate. Make sure you cover the balls completely in chocolate. I like to use a fork to shake the excess chocolate off of the Oreo balls. Dip half of the balls in the chocolate and half in the white chocolate. Place the dipped balls back on the baking tray with parchment paper or wax paper. Decorate with a drizzle of chocolate, additional crushed Oreos, sprinkles, crushed peppermint or crushed nuts, if desired.
  • Place the baking sheet with the Oreo balls in the refrigerator and chill for at least an hour. Keep stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. The Oreo balls will keep in the fridge for up to 3 weeks. You can also freeze the balls for up to 2 months.

These are awesome. I actually made them with Krogerโ€™s Simple Truth Gluten-Free chocolate sandwich cookies, for my sister and niece who are both GF. They were AWESOME!!! And my sister was very excited to get them.

  2. My grandchildren love oreo balls. I also like to make the lemon & mint favorite Oreo balls.
On the lemon balls I use white choc. and sprinkle lemon sugar on top.

Made these last night and turned out perfect. I topped them with some Oreo crumbles which also hid my not so perfect chocolate lol.

I love this recipe!!! It is one of the best. This was probably the best thing I’ve ever made. This recipe saved me for dessert. Lol!!!

    1. I recommend storing them in the fridge. But if you are going to serve them at a party or gift them, they are fine out for a few hours.

  5. When u freeze them, do u freeze the before theyโ€™re dipped in the melted chocolate or can they be frozen totally dipped & decorated?

    1. 5 stars
Freezing them before dipping makes them easier easier to coat with chocolate: After freezing, they’re a less sticky, break apart less easily, and the chocolate hardens a bit faster.

Freezing them after dipping is primarily for storage. If you’re bringing them elsewhere, freezing them means they’ll survive a longer trip without defrosting. If you’re preparing them very far in advance, freezing them will make them store longer. Taste-wise, freezing them doesn’t really make a difference.

  6. When u freeze them, do u freeze the before theyโ€™re dipped in the melted chocolate or can they be frozen totally dipped & decorated?

  7. I will never make these again. The crumbs drop in the chocolate, and you canโ€™t get an even cover, I had to put them back in the freezer but didnโ€™t make any difference. Working with melted chocolate is my downfall.

  8. Sure, if that is what you have. Higher end chocolate and wafers are better for tempering chocolate, but chocolate chips will do!

    1. 12 crushed oreo cookies make ONE CUP. When i make a big batch i use one package of original, one double stuff and one chocolate. I break the cookies in thirds and only process 12 at a time, put the crumbs in a large bag, and measure out 3 cups per 8 oz bar of cream cheese and then freeze them for at least a day. I only melt enough chocolate to dip 12 oreo balls at a time. I take 12 out of the freezer just before dipping. I use about a cup or so of wafers, melt them in the microwave on low ( i use “5” ) in an 8-10 oz coffee mug, after 2 minutes i add a half tsp of white crisco shortening and microwave again for a minute on low …i take them out before the wafers are completely melted ,,stir to melt the rest and keep the mug on a heated trivet while i dip. After lots of trials i found …. do not make them too big or they will fall into the chocolate, melting the chocolate in batches ( new mug each time), and using a toothpick for dipping …. i use the decorative tipped toothpicks and just sprinkle cookie crumbs or decorate around the toothpick. Of course if children are going to be eating them, i pull the toothpick out after i finish that batch and then decorate ….. crumbs need to be added while the chocolate is soft. If you use different flavored wafers, save a few cookie balls, and dip them in different chocolates …you can re-heat in the mug if it has only been a short time and add just a dab of crisco. It sounds like a lot of work, but it is really easy when you get the hang of it, and best thing is, the small batch dipping has never failed me, and trust me, i am no “Betty Crocker ! Hope this helps …..Merry Christmas

This is such a family fav!!!!!!!! Easy and fun to make. Seems like we eat them around the holidays, but really they would be good any time of the year.

I am going to ask my cousin if I can make these for her baby shower November 20th. Hopefully she says yes bc oreo balls are the BEST!

  11. Just got done making these for a coworkers birthday treat and a Bible study group. Yum!! And a fun treat thatโ€™s different than doughnuts or cake. My two year old even liked helping me make them.

  12. So easy and so yummy . Recently a friend purchased these and gave them to me. There were coconut flavoured and coffee flavoured. The coconut ones were very, very delicious. Have you ever flavoured these balls? What would you suggest I should use. Thankyou for all of your recipes. They are always appreciated from down under Australia .

Great recipe! Everyone loved them and they have now been requested as Christmas gifts. My husband almost had to fight his boss for the last one I used chocolate chips and melted them, and the chocolate was plenty thick. Ppl had trouble biting into them. This time Iโ€™ll try to make it less thick when I dip them. I did shake off excess chocolate

  14. Have made this recipe before and love them!! Could you roll out the dough and use a cookie cutter to shape them? Was hoping to have more of a flat / round size (like Oreo shape!) as opposed to balls

  15. Recently I was given some oreo balls that were coconut flavoured and ever so yummy.
What would you suggest that I could use to get the coconut flavour and how much should I use?
    Thank you very much Susan

My friend made these for me and they are totally addictive. She coated them with coconut a which I love. The best part is that you can freeze them and eat them right out of the freezer. They are wonderful frozen.

We added crushed peppermint candycanes in our for a minty chocolate christmas treat. A huge hit. Just wish we made more, they were gone in an hour.

I made these but did something a little different. After making them a few times I thought they were way too rich. So I took out most of the cookie icing, only left about 8 cookies with the icing in them. They were absolutely delicious. Not rich at all. Just the way I like them. Give it a try , you will not be disappointed.

These cookies ( truffles or cake pops ) are a sleeper ! I donโ€™t know how many times I just passed them up in the past thinking โ€œonly a few ingredients , canโ€™t be worth it โ€œ . Well this year I added them to my cookie tray for Christmas ! They were loved by all and everybody said they tasted and looked like they would be so complicated to make . The white chocolate were my favorite ! If you have Oreo lovers they will go crazy over these ! Happy New year everyone !

    1. I just saw the recipe on google. Looking so good and delicious looking forward to make them!!

    1. soft, the chocolate coating will add a slight crunch, but I wouldn’t call it crunchy. Think truffle like.

    1. No, you might need more cream cheese because the Oreos have a cream filling that helps bind everything together.

Oreo balls freeze really well. You can make a month in advance without issue. Refrigerated, I wouldn’t trust them for more than a around 3 days, since the cream cheese will go bad.

    2. 5 stars
You can refrigerate these up to 3 weeks safely. The cream cheese will absolutely not go bad in 3 days.

  20. I make at least five batches of these for the kids. They love them. I have made these forever. I found it easier to scrap the cookie and separate the cream. I use a rolling pin to get fine as my hubby told me it has to be a dust. Trust me I have blown up many mixer on my candy balls.

These are yummy! I did one batch with regular Oreos and one with mint Oreos. Dipped some in dark chocolate and some in white chocolate and drizzled with the opposite chocolate. Used green sprinkles to differentiate the mint ones! Will take them to a holiday party tomorrow. Thanks for an easy and fun recipe!

OoOooh my goodness. I have never made Oreo Balls. WoW !! This recipe is spot on. I took the advice to separate the cookie from the cream. I pulsed the dry cookie in my food processor. THAT was so much easier than a gooey mess with the cream center. Mixed the cream cheese and the cookie cream. Added the crushed “Oreo dust” LoL ๐Ÿ™‚ and I chose the white bark for my topping. I also found a hack with dipping the frozen balls. I put some water in a pan, and used my glass lid. Flip the lid upside down and add the bark to melt. It was soOoo easy to keep a small simmer of the water with the bark in the lid to “dip” my Oreo balls. THESE are ahhhhh~mazing !!! TY for sharing.
