Brownies are hands down one of my all-time favorite desserts. I love this brownie recipe, but the other day I needed a quick and EASY dessert because some friends stopped by unexpectedly and I wanted to serve them something sweet. I whipped up my One Bowl Brownies and everyone was dying over the deliciousness!

These easy homemade brownies taste similar to box brownies, in a good way, but even better! And I promise they are just as easy. You only need ONE bowl and you don’t even need a mixer! I guarantee they will be a family favorite dessert.

Best Brownie Recipe

These brownies are perfect in EVERY way! A few things I love about them:

  • They are EASY! You can’t beat a ONE bowl recipe!
  • They are chewy and GOOEY!
  • They are FUDGY!
  • They have shiny, CRACKLY tops!
  • They are rich and CHOCOLATY!
Best Brownie Recipe

Ingredients

I always have the ingredients on hand to make these brownies because you never know when a craving will strike or when friends might stop in for an impromptu dessert night! The ingredients are simple, but when they all come together you will be left with the most amazing pan of brownies.

  • Butter-Use unsalted butter. The butter needs to be melted and cooled slightly. You can melt the butter in the microwave or in a pan on the stovetop.
  • Sugar AND Brown Sugar-use granulated sugar AND brown sugar. The brown sugar makes the brownies extra moist!
  • Eggs-choose large eggs and make sure they are at room temperature. I usually take the eggs out of the fridge 30 minutes before I start. If you forget, place your eggs in a bowl of warm water for a few minutes.
  • Vanilla ExtractPURE vanilla extract is the way to go! I know it is pricey, but SO worth the extra cost.
  • Flour-You need all-purpose flour. If you need the brownies to be gluten-free you can use all-purpose gluten-free flour. I like Cup4Cup gluten-free flour.
  • Cocoa-I like to use Dutch processed cocoa but you can use unsweetened cocoa powder. Splurge and use a high quality cocoa for the best chocolate flavor. I like this Dutch processed cocoa or this one!
  • Espresso Powder-The espresso powder is optional but I like using it because it intensifies the chocolate flavor. I highly recommend using it for the best brownies. It really makes a difference.
  • Salt-Use kosher salt or sea salt.
  • Chocolate-I like to use semi-sweet chocolate chunks, but feel free to use chocolate chips. Guittard brand is my favorite!

Can I add Nuts?

Yes! If you like brownies with nuts you can stir in 1 cup of chopped nuts when you stir in the chocolate chunks. Walnuts, pecans, and almonds are all good options.

Should I Use a Metal Or Glass Pan?

You need a 9×13-inch pan for this recipe. You can a metal or glass pan, but I prefer baking brownies in a metal pan, just make sure the pan isn’t too dark. When you use a metal pan, the brownie edges and corners get crispier and I am all about the brownie edges. I know some people like the middle and that is fine, but I want a brownie with a nice edge:) If you use a glass pan, you might have to bake the brownies for 5 more minutes. Check them to be sure!

If you want a thicker brownie, you can use a 7×11-inch pan or 8×12-inch pan, but you will need to bake the brownies for longer.

How to Make Brownies

Here are a few tips that will help you make the BEST brownies every single time!

  • Line your baking pan with parchment paper. Spray a 9×13″ baking pan with nonstick cooking spray. Line with parchment paper with an overhang on the sides and spray again. This will make it easy to lift the brownies out of the pan after baking.
  • In a large mixing bowl stir together the melted butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth and combined.
  • Sift the flour and cocoa together to make sure you don’t have any cocoa clumps.
  • Don’t over mix the batter. If you over mix the brownies will turn out cakey and they won’t have a nice crackly top.
  • Don’t over bake. This one is REALLY important. If you over bake, your brownies won’t be fudgy and moist. They will keep baking in the pan while they are cooling so take them out when are just set. Use a toothpick to test for doneness. For fudge brownies, you want there to be a some crumbs stuck to the toothpick. Check at 25 minutes to be safe.
  • Let the brownies cool completely before cutting. Cut with a sharp knife or you can cut with a plastic knife. Yes, a plastic knife works wonders when cutting brownies. The crumbs don’t stick to the plastic. It’s amazing!
Easy Brownie Recipe

How to Store

Uncut brownies that are stored in the pan and covered will keep on the counter for up to 4 days. If you cut the brownies, they will dry out faster. Wrap cut brownies in plastic wrap and keep on the counter for 1 to 2 days. Don’t store brownies in the refrigerator or they will dry out.

You can freeze brownies, they actually freeze really well. I always like having brownies tucked away in our freezer. Wrap brownies tightly in plastic wrap, then wrap again with foil or place in a freezer bag. Note-I don’t like to freeze brownie squares because they don’t keep as well.

I like to freeze a pan of brownies or at least a half pan at a time. Freeze the brownies for up to 3 months. When ready to serve, thaw at room temperature before cutting into individual servings.

Best Party Dessert

This fudge brownie recipe is the perfect party dessert. The brownies are made in a 9×13 pan so they are perfect for feeding a crowd! You can easily take the pan of brownies to a party, I guarantee you will come home with an empty pan.

They are good served alone but if you want to go over the top, take a brownie square and add a scoop of ice cream and hot fudge sauce or salted caramel sauce. OH YEAH! Dessert doesn’t have to be fancy to be the BEST!

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Spray a 9×13" baking pan with nonstick cooking spray. Line with parchment paper with an overhang on the sides and spray again. This will make it easy to lift the brownies out of the pan after baking. Set the pan aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl whisk together melted butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar. Whisk until sugar is dissolved. Add the eggs and vanilla extract until smooth and combined.
  • Sift in flour and cocoa. Add the salt and espresso powder, if using, and stir until just combined. Don't over mix. Fold in 1 cup of chopped chocolate. Spread evenly into prepared pan and sprinkle the remaining ¼ cup of chopped chocolate on top of the brownies.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes on the middle rack in the oven until the brownies are just set to touch. Don't over bake the brownies. They will set up as they cool. Remove from oven and let cool before cutting into squares. You can sprinkle them with a little flaky sea salt, if desired.

    1. You use chocolate chunks. You can buy chocolate chunks or chop up your favorite chocolate bar. You can also use chocolate chips! I hope that helps!

  1. These are absolutely delish! I used the espresso powder and feel it made the difference. I couldnโ€™t wait to try them so cut off the edge to taste test them. Some of the best brownies I have had!

  2. 5 stars
Loved these brownies so much! Even if it took more than one bowl I would make them again and again!

  3. For the chopped chocolate is there a preference for type used ( unsweet/semisweet/ bittersweet/milk) ?

  4. Okay, she’s seriously not kidding – these ARE the best brownies ever! We are major brownie enthusiasts over here and have tried countless brownie recipes. These are so easy and insanely delicious. We also used the exact recipe but baked them in a square pan to make them thicker and 35 minutes was the perfect bake time. We are actually making them again today! You miss these when they are gone! Delicious!

    1. 5 stars
Oooh these are a tie for me with the ghiradelli recipe. I love the rich chocolate in this one but love the texture of the other one so Iโ€™m gonna try to modify and make the PERFECT brownie these were amazing though!! Iโ€™m a huge cake fan so cake like brownies are my jam but the flavor of these were great and I always recommend using ghiradelli chocolate. I recently started using it in everything cause a friend of mine uses it and my goodness itโ€™s so addictive I eat either cupcakes or brownies everyday and have no idea how Iโ€™m not the size of a house yet but thank you Jesus for my metabolism lol got a little side tracked but great brownies!!! Most recipes Iโ€™ve tried online have been too chewy or too crumbly or not enough chocolate but I would recommend these to anyone ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. 1 star
I made these brownies and they were very cakey. I followed this recipe perfectly, so I donโ€™t know why this happened. Does anyone know why?!?!

  5. 5 stars
We have tried countless homemade brownie recipes over the years and nothing could ever compete with a box brand we love. Then, we made these – the one bowl wonder brownies. We are 100% converted. This is – officially – our favorite brownie recipe ever. And, itโ€™s one bowl, no weird ingredients, super fast to make. Bravo on the best brownie recipe ever!

  6. 5 stars
This IS the best brownie recipe EVER! Thank you!! I have made this recipe a few times and itโ€™s always awesome. Halving the recipe works fine too. Today, I realized I only had half the cocoa powder (the horror!), so I supplemented with cocoa PB2 for a peanutbutterish brownie. Also came out fantastic.

  7. I baked these this weekend. I have experience baking cakes, but I have never made, or eaten, a home made brownie, so when it said bake until just firm I did that without putting a toothpick in the middle to test doneness. I thought maybe that was the way it was done with brownies. The result? Brownies that were raw in the middle.

I tried again, this time I baked the brownies for forty minutes. (I used a 9×9 pan. It was my only deviation from the recipe.) They turned out perfect. ooey, gooey, and delicious.

I stuck the entire parchment paper containing the first batch in the freezer for a while. They firmed up nicely, and my nephew actually prefers them to the second batch. I also think I could have just mixed it a little further and called it brownie pudding with actual brownie bites.

  8. I have a daughter in-law that needs dairy free. Can I successfully substitute Smart Balance for butter? Can you brown Smart Balance?

    1. My daughter has a dairy allergy and I use coconut oil as a replacement for butter in all my baking. It wonโ€™t brown but other than that it is exactly the same as using butter.

    2. Coconut oil is SOOOO good as a replacement. I personally love it. Smart balance would work but it does have a mild taste thatโ€™s a little off to me. Vegetable oil makes them a little dry so def go for the coconut oil if you have it! There is a vegan butter brand at Publix which is amazing r canโ€™t remember the name. It comes in stick form and is great though

These are so freaking delicious! I didn’t have any chocolate on hand, but I added pecans and made a cream cheese caramel frosting to go on top and we devoured them in three days. I’m making them again tonight and will make two pans, one with white chocolate chips, and the other with butterscotch chips and pecans! This’ll be my go to recipe for sure ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. 5 stars
Today, after a long day of school I was craving something sweet. But I didnโ€™t had the energy to do a lot of work to bake something. So I looked on Pinterest and found this super easy and quick recipe to make brownies! It literally saved my day! The brownies were so delicious! I would call them the one bowl wonder browniesโœจ. And because it was just one bowl, I didnโ€™t had to do a lot of dishes. Wich was super handy!

    1. Just make sure to Whisk the Sugar & Butter for at least 2-3minutes. The butter & sugar rise to the top an form that Wonderful Crackley Crust on top!

  11. 5 stars
These brownies are phenomenal! I am picky when it comes to brownies because I always taste oil and donโ€™t like that. These donโ€™t have oil in them and the flavor is out of this world. Thank you for sharing.

  12. 5 stars
This recipe is DELICIOUS my favorite brownies! I want to try to make these in a heart shape silicone mold, do you think I’d have to adjust temp or cook time?

    1. Glad you like the brownies. A heart shape would be super cute. If it is the same size pan, bake for the same time. Check a few minutes early just to be safe since the pan is different. It may take longer, I am not sure, but just watch them! Enjoy!

    2. Bummer! May as well be chocolate cake. Seriously. ๐Ÿ™ Followed the recipe โ€˜to a tโ€™. I was really looking forward to a fudgy, gooey brownie with that gorgeous shiny crackle.

  13. 5 stars
Okay, I love experimenting and trying new recipes. My kids won’t stop eating this haha. It is AMAZING..
Give it a try, you won’t regret it!!! Thank you for the recipe!

  14. 5 stars
Made this recipe yesterday and I can’t believe how amazing these brownies are!! Can’t believe there’s even a few leftover for today…need to stop myself from eating the entire tray! Maria these are the best homemade brownies I have every made. Followed the recipe exactly. Thank you so very much!

  15. Amazing! Just made these and can’t stop eating them. This recipe is a keeper. Thanks so much.

  16. Hi, I made this earlier and it tastes great! I’m definitely going with this recipe from now on. One question, how much can I reduce the sugar, if that’s possible for brownies?

  17. I just made these, but i must’ve doNe something wrong- its the consistency of a chocolate cake, not gooey chewy brownies. Any idea what i mightve done?

  18. 4 stars
Wish I knew why my brownies arent baking at 350 for 25 min but taking almost an hour and still liquid in the middle?

    1. You may need to check temp of your oven. I had that happen only my oven temp was way over what it was set at. Sounds like oven is not heating to the temp you are selecting. If that is the case, other food you are cooking may not be reaching proper internal temps for food safety. I would have it checked.

    2. I used a heavy French ceramic baking dish, and mine took longer too. Metal and Pyrex would be faster.

    3. 5 stars
Iโ€™m not usually a review-poster but I found this recipe a few months ago and itโ€™s now my go to! My daughter loves them so much that instead of a birthday cake she wanted these brownies for her party, so I made a 1/2 sheet pan, and everyone loved them. The only change I made is using instant coffee granules instead of espresso powder because thatโ€™s what I have on hand. Last time I made them, I forgot the salt. I was worried theyโ€™d be ruined but they were still great! Thereโ€™s another batch in the oven now and my daughter said she wishes I always made as much as I made for her birthday party!

  19. 2 stars
After reading all the instructions and notes I followed everything that was suggested and Iโ€™m really disappointed. Mine also came out as a dry chocolate cake. ๐Ÿ™ deleting this recipe now, unfortunately.

  20. I love these!! Iโ€™m also nursing right now and wanted to try lactation brownies to see if it would help my supply. I added 1 tbsp water, 4 tbsps nutritional yeast (or brewerโ€™s yeast), and 2 tbsps flax meal. Baking time was the same. They came out perfectly!

My baby also has a dairy sensitivity, but using coconut oil in place of the butter (and dairy-free chocolate chunks) did the trick.

    Thanks for the great recipe!

    1. I think that would interfere with the batter and make it too liquid. You can leave out the espresso powder with no problems. I always use some leftover brewed coffee when I make box mix brownies and it really helps the flavor

  21. 2 stars
Too much salt (and I love salt in my desserts) not fudge at all. More like cake. Wonโ€™t be making this recipe again.

  22. 5 stars
Best brownies ever!! Your recipes are always top notch. Can’t beat that they are one bowl either โ˜บ๏ธ

  23. 4 stars
Made these tonight while we’re in “Corona Captivity” and everyone loved them! Will definitely be moving this recipe to my Success Board.

    1. 5 stars
My husband hates brownies, well until I made these.. they are so delicious and easy to make ๐Ÿ™‚

  24. 5 stars
I loved it. I subbed half a cup of almond flour from my almond milk and omitted the espresso powder. Thank you for sharing!

  25. 5 stars
These are the best brownies EVER. I literally told everyone about them. I used dark chocolate chips instead of chopped chocolate because thatโ€™s what I had and I also skipped the espresso powder because I donโ€™t keep that on hand. I cannot wait to make these again!

This might be a silly question though- do I have to use the parchment paper?

    1. I am so glad you love the brownies! I think they are the best too:) If you don’t use parchment, make sure you grease the pan really well.

  26. Loved the brownies! Does anyone know why mine were not shiny on top or crackled like pic… they just looked like matt cake top x

  27. 5 stars
Mine didn’t have the shiny top either, Shali. I used semi sweet choc. chips. Still yummy and will bake again. Maybe next time just one bowl and not five. Take care all!

    1. So I followed everything to the T and mine turned out super dense and heavy. No sure where I went wrong… wasted them

  28. Do you really use 1 tablespoon of vanilla? Or should it be 1 teaspoon? Making tonight because they sound delicious. Thanks!

    1. 5 stars
Made these last night and used Hersheyโ€™s special dark unsweetened cocoa powder in it and they are hands down the best brownies Iโ€™ve EVER had. So easy to whip up after dinner when youโ€™re craving something sweet ๐Ÿ™‚ I canโ€™t wait to make them again!

  29. Why is there no rising agent in the recipe? I don’t understand how this recipe can work without baking soda or baking powder

  30. Hi! I read the recipe wrong and used and 8×8 pan…any guesses on how long they should bake?

    1. They will take longer so the middles can get done. Add an additional 10 minutes and check them. It might take longer.

  31. 5 stars
These brownies were brilliant. I tried to prevent myself from eating them too fast by freezing them. No luck – I just ended up eating them frozen and they were still delicious. Cheered me up no end during lockdown!!

  32. 5 stars
These are SO SO good!!! The chunks of chocolate inside and on top make this brownie 10X better.

This recipe is very easy and they come out perfectly fudgey, just perfectly cakey, chocolatey, soft, crisp and cracked top!!

    delicious!!!

  33. 5 stars
We used chocolate and PB chips. Stellar! We like ours on the gooey side so we used glass and took them out right at 25 minutes

  34. 4 stars
awesome brownies. are you supposed to be able to taste the salt though? i added 1 tsp of kosher salt as directed.

    1. They shouldn’t be salty, but a little kick of salt here and there is nice. The flaky salt on top helps add a kick of salt!

    1. 5 stars
These were amazing. I used dark chocolate chips and it turned out well
      Thank you for the recipe.

  35. I love so many of your recipes, but it just doesn’t make sense that you include such outrageously unhealthy recipes on your blog. Really, particularly in this day and age where there’s so much information surrounding heart health, diabetes prevention, etc, who in their right mind would make these?? 1 cup of butter….TWO cups of sugar to one cup of flour? Good lord, talk about killing yourself. As such a highly visible person, you have the platform to conceivably make a difference…in a good way!

    1. 5 stars
Come on lady โ€” itโ€™s a BROWNIE RECIPE!!! And a DELICIOUS ONE at that!! Particularly in this day and age, you should know to keep your negative comments to yourself!! It is okay to indulge from time to time; moderation is key. That said, itโ€™s absolutely NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS what other people choose to eat! Good or bad!

    2. 5 stars
CWP made me laugh so hard! Maybe this quarantine period has them so bored, they decided to spend their time trolling. The brownies are delicious and I ate an extra one in CWP’s honor!

    3. If you have a problem with the unhealthy recipes then donโ€™t follow the blog. Donโ€™t waste your time. Focus on you.

    4. Ahhhh CWP as someone who eats 90% vegan and whose friends describe them as someone who eats extremely healthy and seldom eats desserts, I have decided to eat one of these in your honor. My low cholesterol, blood sugar, and BMI are perfectly capable of having a delicious brownie every once in a while, you should enjoy one too. All things in life are good in moderation.
Thanks for the excuse to eat a dessert this weekend. Hopefully you’ll spend a little less time criticizing other people’s choices and instead spread positivity next time you come across a recipe that looks this delicious.

  36. 3 stars
These are SUPER rich and chocolaty, and I even skipped adding more on top. We love brownies, but they were too heavy for my family. ๐Ÿ™

  37. I just tried these and am wondering if the bake time is off? I followed your recipe very closely and didn’t make any substitutions. I baked them only until 25 minutes and they came out very dry and cake-like

  38. 5 stars

    1. Grace,
I loved your response and agree 100%. My 19 and 15 year old sons were craving brownies and begging me to make them. I took this as a teaching opportunity , pulled up the recipe and had them make it. They we’re fabulous!!! Now I can ask my son’s to make them for me.

  39. Hands down, THE BEST BROWNIE RECIPE I’VE EVER USED. These are to die for and they are so rich and delicious. I’ll never make a box brownie again!

  40. 3 stars
These brownies taste good but I did not get the crakly top which I am somewhat disapointed. They didn’t end up fudgy either although I cooked it in a glass pan and for 25min not the recomended extra 5 mins. Maybe I cooked it too long? Anyhow, they are good but was expecting something better. Will try it again and will cook it for less time. Hope this will solve my issue.

  41. 5 stars
Luv luv luv these !! I have made them twice and have chopped up little Hersheyโ€™s with almonds nuggets and tossed em in bowl . They come out so chewy with a nice shiny top . Thanks for this great recipe.

  42. Just took it out of the oven . I cooked it in a glass bake-ware so let it cook an extra 5 mins. as instructed . Mine did not have the cracked brownie look , I hope that it tastes as good as it smells. High hopes for this to not be cake like. Either way I’ll eat it lol

  43. I made it today and it was delicious! Mine didnt have the shiny and cracked top either. I thought i didn’t over mixed ( i even counted to 50 only, LOL!) but it’s okay, they were delicious!!

  44. I normally donโ€™t take the time to leave reviews but this one deserves the time! Best brownie I have ever had. My very critical husband called them โ€œbetter than restaurant quality!โ€ The only thing that was different for me was that I had to add on more cooking time. Even the next day these were fudge filled and moist!

  45. 4 stars
Iโ€™ve made these 3 times and the first two times i made it normally and they were way too dark and tasted eggy. This time i made them and i only use 3 eggs, 1/2 cup cocoa powder, and 1 1/2 cups flour and they were SO GOOD. I used chocolate chips instead of bakers chocolate because it was all i had and i was still able to get the crispy top.

  46. 5 stars
These are chocoholic good. I, like others, did not get a crackle top but it doesn’t really matter because they are so good and it gives me an excuse to make them again. Thank you!

  47. 5 stars
I halved this recipe to try it out and used an 8 by 8 glass pan and only baked for about 17 minutes and they came out so perfect! I added espresso coffee (cafe bustelo) and it really elevated the flavor. This is going to be my go to recipe for brownies, love that it is one bowl too! Thank you!

  48. 5 stars
Best brownies ever! I used a brownie pan & reduced their cook time. Used dark chocolate chips & made some w/Reeseโ€™s pieces too! DEELISH they never last long!

  49. 5 stars
Most amazing, if you would ever think to say that about a brownie! Always have used a boxed mix, but NO MORE! Thanks for this one!

  50. 4 stars
This is my 2nd time cooking them, they are so delicious! I do have a question: should I have a clean toothpick at the end of baking to make sure they are cooked enough?

    1. The toothpick should come out mostly clean unless you hit a chocolate chunk:)

  51. 5 stars
Wow! These are the best and easiest brownies I have ever had! They turned out perfectly. This is the second batch I’ve made in 3 days (some of the second batch are for my sister-in-law’s birthday though). My son even went to the store to buy me some more eggs to make more! This is my go to brownie recipe. Thanks so much!

  52. 4 stars
Pretty good! I normally make a One Bowl recipe that uses oil. This had a better taste, but was kind of dry. May add a little extra something for moisture next time.
    Yummy though!!

  53. 5 stars
Easy, and sooooo good. My kids said these are the only brownies I should ever make. They are so moist and perfect! Wonderful recipe. A++++++++++++++++++++

    1. These were super amazing thank you.. I had made it for a friend and their kids.. They absolutely loved it..thanks for the recipe xx

  54. 5 stars
Iโ€™ve been a baker for many years and this is my favorite brownie recipe. I love how moist and rich these are. I have made them with salted caramel chips and they are super yummy as well!

  55. Let me start this comment that I AM NOT A BAKER. Iโ€™m the type that makes toll house cookies and mess them up. The kids say thatโ€™s ok mom you donโ€™t have to bake! So for me to say these brownies are not just easy but a HUGE hit should hold some weight. Easy and delish- I subbed out espresso chocolate morsels and added all at once. Thank you for the recipe!

  56. I made for my pregnant co worker. I added cookie crumble to the bottom and top. My boyfriend and sister could not stop eating the batter.

  57. Hi I am a Baker and since months I was looking out for Chocolate Brownie Receipe and finally came across yours.
Was completely satisfied with available ingredients and one bowl mixing of ingredients. + Explanation was very simple to follow.
Made it without much efforts and absolutely perfect taste which I was expecting.
Came out exactly shown in your photo.
Amazingly delicious. Thank you very much.

    1. 5 stars
These were so good! I wanted a different recipe then the one I grew up with. Whoever said these were dry must of done something wrong!! Dont overmix! I didnt have espresso powder although it’s on my grocery list. I added semi sweet choc chips.
      So amazing.

  58. 5 stars
My favorite brownie recipe thus far! I used a very similar recipe previously but at room temp the brownies became hard. With this recipe, even at room temperature the brownies remain nice and soft and gooey. Super chocolatey, with a nice sweetness yet not too sickly sweet. I cooked mine for 23 minutes in a glass pan until just barely set in the center. Added in toasted walnuts, a sprinkle of flaky sea salt on top and served with berries and whip cream. Lovely.

  59. 5 stars
I made these brownies a month ago and haven’t stopped thinking about them since. That is huge! I have gone my whole life craving brownies only to be disappointed once I had some, however these are the real deal! I can’t recommend this recipe enough. Add a little flaky sea salt to the top before putting in the oven for an extra special something extra.

  60. 5 stars
These are ridiculously good! Iโ€™ve been a Bakerโ€™s Chocolate One-Bowl Brownie evangelist for decades. Not anymore. Making a second batch as we speak…

  61. 5 stars
It was amazing! We had to put for a bit longer cause it wasnt baking at first but it was exactly like the description

These are the best brownies Iโ€™ve ever had or made! And I consider myself a chocolate expert, or addict, take your pick! I baked them a couple of minutes less than the recipe says, because my oven is a little too hot, and they came out perfectly gooey and yummy. I like to cut them up and keep them in the freezer for a refreshing snack or dessert.

  65. These brownies were the best. Every thing you want in a brownie. Gooey, chocolaty goodness. I didnโ€™t have espresso powder on hand but had instant coffee and there was just a hint of coffee flavor that intensified the chocolate and made it even richer in flavor. So easy. Made them with my grandkids and we added mini m&ms. We ate them warm topped with mint chocolate chip ice cream. So yummy!

As someone whose diet mostly consists of brownies, my life was incomplete before I found your recipe. I’m always on the search for the fudgiest recipe, and I had settled for a recipe I thought was the pinnacle of fudge. But how I was wrong. Thank you for creating such a recipe, it made my week!

  67. 5 stars
The only brownies I will ever bake again. The first time I baked them using a 9×13″ pan. The second time I used a smaller pan. I liked the 9×13″ version the best. Thin & moist and oh, so delicious!

  68. 5 stars
This did NOT last us a day Thats how good it was! Less dishes to use which is a bonus- but man these brownies are heavenly! Never going to make any other brownies

    1. I use semi-sweet chocolate. You can buy chocolate chunks or chop up your favorite chocolate bar. You can also use chocolate chips if that is what you have.

  69. I just made these for my family and they are fabulous! I skipped sifting the flour (didn’t want to dirty another bowl….) and sprinkled salt on top. They were perfectly cooked at 25 minutes. Yum. Huge hit and I froze half the recipe.

  70. 3 stars
These were good but did not have the crackly top. I wondered about the number of eggs as they were quite cakey.

  71. I was not a fan of these brownies. I followed the recipe, but was concerned by the 4 eggs and no leavening agent. I was correct. They were too intense, not chewy… actually too crumbly. Sorry.โ€โ™€๏ธ

  72. So looking forward to making these! Unfortunately I canโ€™t get King Arthur espresso until Monday but need to make these tomorrow. Can you please recommend another brand to use? Also can you tell me which brand of semi sweet chocolate bar you use?

    Thank you!

    1. Look at your local grocery store. You can use any brand. I like DeLallo too! Same with the chocolate, use your favorite brand. The Trader Joe’s pound plus bars are good! But grab any chocolate you love!

  73. 5 stars
Iโ€™ve never made homemade brownies in my 49 years, I let my mom do it until now lol! But I tried these, my 22 year old son said they were the best brownies heโ€™s ever had. (Letโ€™s not tell Grandma lol, but I did share the recipe with her). For the espresso, I used 1 TBSP instant coffee, and used Imperial margarine as I didnโ€™t have butter, and I crushed up a mint chocolate bar, Great Value brand from Walmart, and sprinkled that on top. Today I crushed up their almond milk chocolate bar and am trying that. But this is hands down the easiest and most moist brownie Iโ€™ve ever made

  74. 5 stars
These brownies are incredible. Left out the espresso powder but followed everything else exactly. Baked for 32 minutes and they were the perfect level of fudgy richness. Thanks for the recipe!

  75. These are the best I have EVER had. EVER. No joke!!! Its Christmas time and I have have made several batches for everyone. Unbelievably good every single time!!!!

    1. I haven’t used it, but if you like the flavor, it should be fine. Yes, use the same amount.

  76. 5 stars
Just finished making them. Wow! They are delicious. Appreciate all the tips about storing/freezing them. Another winner โญ๏ธ

Iโ€™ve been searching for years for the perfect brownie recipe! One that taste just like the boxed brownies we all love and let me tell you this recipe is amazing! The best recipe Iโ€™ve found and so easy to make. Thank you for sharing

Love love your recipes … brownies are amazing!! I do use Crisco butter flavored baking sticks softened, and about 3/4 cup cocoa. Thank you for recipes I know will be scrumptious

  79. Can I substitute melted coconut oil for butter (1:1) in the recipe? Looking for a dairy free option. Thanks!

  80. 5 stars
These are fantastic and so easy to make! I have never made brownies from scratch, but will from now on. This is a great recipe and will be easy to adjust for various brownie flavors!

  81. 5 stars
The recipe is really good! I didnโ€™t have brown sugar, so I used 3/4 cup of syrup instead and it still worked

  82. So I was REALLY in the mood for homemade brownies, but I’m currently at my mom’s house and don’t have my go to recipe with me. I instead took to pinterest and came across this one. I did make a few changes to mimic my blessed recipe (switched the chocolate for semi-sweet chocolate chips and added a few scoops of nutella…left out the coffee) and these were the best brownies I have ever put in my mouth. This is now my new go to recipe. Thank you so much for sharing this with us! You are a gem.

  83. 5 stars
I love this recipe! My kids have taken these brownies to school for various events and they’re always a hit. Thank you for sharing.

  84. 5 stars
Amazing!!!!!! Love this recipe, made it twice now w/o espresso powder and its soooooo good! I pinned to make again and again and gave to a g/f whose hubby shares my love of brownies! We talk brownies often LOL

  85. 5 stars
Oh my gosh, these are in the oven now, and the batter alone out of this world! So long ghirardelli mix!

  86. 3 stars
I hesitated when the recipe promised gooey and then called for 4 eggs, but decided to give it a try. They came out cakey and crumbly, just as I worried. Really good flavor though.

  87. 5 stars
Iโ€™ve made these a number of times, first time rating. My dear husband is in love with these brownies and gets super excited each time I make them! These definitely donโ€™t last long in our home! Thank you for the recipe!

  88. 5 stars
These are so gooey and delicious! We sprinkled Graham crackers in a bowl, topped with these brownies and a semi-melted marshmallow. They’d also be delicious with ice cream! Thanks for the recipe!!

  89. 5 stars
Fantastic! I wanted something quick and easy but homemade for some guests coming over and I didn’t have much time. This was perfect! I will be making these all the time! Thanks!

  92. These look wonderful but I have never seen a brownie recipe where the chocolate has not been melted first; a tad longer to make but I have never seen a recipe like yours.

  93. 5 stars
These are so good! My new go to brownie recipe. I omitted the espresso, because I didnโ€™t have any. Theyโ€™re super fudgy and so rich. I used semi-sweet chocolate chunks. Thank-you for sharing this recipe!

  94. 5 stars
I made a double batch and one pan is already gone. Nice, easy-to-remember measurements for next time. I couldnโ€™t tell if I underbaked or if itโ€™s just gooey. I go heavy on the choco chips! Itโ€™s tasty regardless.

  95. 5 stars
Baked these with a 9 year old for her birthday and they turned out SO good! Definitely will be my go-to for homemade brownies, thank you!

  96. 2 stars
Hmmm are you sure it should be 9×13 pan? Followed recipe and brownies are pretty thin not thick and gooey or crackly. Easy to make but definitely didn’t turn out like pic. Maybe using a 9×9 or 8×8 pan it would have came out like the pic.

  97. These are BY FAR the BEST brownies I’ve ever made!!! Believe me, I’ve tried so very many throughout the yrs. Absolutely the BEST! Thank you for sharing

  98. 5 stars
This recipe is so simple. I love that itโ€™s not filled with salt like a box mix. Absolutely delicious. I used the espresso powder, nestle chocolate chips, Trader Joeโ€™s unsweetened cocoa powder, and light brown sugar. Mmmmmm mmmm good!

  99. 5 stars
I made these as a gift for family members we visited. They were a huge hit! I definitely underbaked them (the middle was only edible by my husband, who thinks brownies are a good way to ruin brownie batter), but we ate them before they would have turned. Thank you for sharing!

  100. For those asking, espresso powder IS instant espresso. Itโ€™s never ground coffee beans in baking. I use Medaglia dโ€™oro which is easy to find.

  101. 5 stars
Wow! I was a bit nervous that there was no mention of baking powder or soda but I tried it anyway with some good chocolate I had on hand and dang girl! And it makes an entire 13×9 too! I have tried so many recipes and this is the one for our family!
My search is over! Thank you! I can’t wait to try some peanut butter swirled on top next time!

  102. 5 stars
I cant believe how easy these are! Just made my second batch. The family loved them. I didn’t have quite enough dark brown sugar so i subsituted 1/2 cup of light brown sugar with 1/2 cup dark brown and it has worked so well!

  103. Thank you for including gluten free option. I like recipes that include modifications. My daughter loves to bake. Sheโ€™s gluten sensitive.

  104. 5 stars
I have made this three times now with three different gluten free flour blends and it remains the BEST ever brownie recipe. I donโ€™t use instant expresso granules because I donโ€™t keep those on hand. I use Saco Premium Blended cocoa (natural and dutched). I use Penzeyโ€™s double vanilla which is admittedly pricey but even with expired vanilla extract itโ€™s still good. For chocolate I use a blend of semi-sweet chips (cookโ€™s illustrated recommends Hersheyโ€™s brand) and broken up Hersheyโ€™s special dark bars. The only thing I do at all different is sometimes I mix premium whipped salted butter for half the total butter. I go to a local restaurant that makes fresh butter and I weigh out 4oz and melt that with a stick of cheap unsalted butter from the store. Sometimes I use a different shape of pan but adjust cooking time and drive on.

Anyway, Krusteez cup for cup gluten free flour blend (usually available at Walmart or grocery stores) works just fine. You wonโ€™t regret making this recipe. Unless youโ€™re on a diet.

  105. 5 stars
Hands down the best I made this with GF flour and it was still great. Thanks Maria for a great dessert

  106. 5 stars
    Hello,

I absolutely LOVE these brownies !! I hope I am doing them correctly as they don’t look anything like the picture. They are so silky smooth, fudgy and chocolatey … DELICIOUS . Thank you for sharing the recipe.

  107. 5 stars
We made these for Christmas dinner and accidently LEFT OUT THE BUTTER! The melted butter had been set aside to cool and was forgotten in all the kitchen commotion. We had substituted egg-whites and when the mixture seemed too thick (due to the lack of butter), we simply added more egg-whites. We didnโ€™t realize the butter was still in its saucepan until the brownies were nearly cooked. Since they smelled good we tasted them and they were DELICIOUS and the texture was WONDERFUL. Crunchy and chewy and beautiful. Since we still had the butter and enough ingredients for another batch, we cooked another pan with the butter and spent the rest of the day making side by side comparisons. Both batches were delicious and we decided that when we make them again weโ€™ll skip the butter. Wonderful brownies without the cholesterol and fat. What a treat!

  108. 5 stars
These brownies turned out great! I followed the recipe exactly as written – minus I didn’t have a sifter so I used a second bowl to hand mix the flour and cocoa powder to break up any cocoa clumps. I also mixed in Ghirardelli extra dark chocolate chips. These came out slightly cakey but also fudgey, best of both. I do feel like these are very rich but so are boxed brownie mix. Trust me these are way better than boxed brownies though. I used a 9×9 dark pan baked for 35 mins and it was perfect. In some spots it had that nice crackle top but not over the whole thing, I tried to not over mix. These brownies still came out amazing and would definitely make again. I made these for my Husbands birthday as he is not a cake person and he was surprised at how good these were. Thank you for such a great easy homemade brownie recipe!

    1. Thanks for reporting back! I am thrilled you loved the brownies. They are our favorite.

  109. 5 stars
Amazing! Never going back to anything else. These were delicious and we gobbled up in record time! Highly recommend! This is so easy!

  110. This is an excellent brownie I used a 7/11 inch pan an added some nuts. Baked for about 40 min. Till center was almost set an toothpick had a little crumb on it. Brownies were thick an oh so chewy really a great receipt. Hubs loved them.

  111. 5 stars
Wow!!! These came out amazing! Followed exactly but used semi sweet chips and this recipe was a hit. Definitely a keeper, thank you for sharing!!

  112. brownies looks good and glad coffee optional cuz dont like the stuff and the taste that it give to the brownies or cake

  113. 5 stars
This recipe is excellent. I did not use the chocolate chips, so added a little extra sugar. They were still perfect.

    1. I was going to ask about that. I have everything to make them except the chocolate. Was hoping not to have to shop first, so glad you can omit the chocolate.

  114. 5 stars
Oh my gosh these brownies are the absolute best! I have never made a brownie from scratch that tasted this good! My family devoured them! Thank you for sharing!

  115. 5 stars
Definitely delicious! A bit more on the cakey side than some other recipes I have tried but I would definitely make these again.

  116. 5 stars
I made the half batch and they turned out fine and are yummy!
This is my third recipe from your site in just a week or so…a Happy Find!

  117. 5 stars
Hands down the best brownies Iโ€™ve ever made/enjoyed. The dusting of salt, I use Fleur de Sel, is the perfect finish. Great recipe. Iโ€™ve made a half dozen times already, always in a glass 9×13 and theyโ€™ve turned out perfectly each time.

  118. 5 stars
Love these! After stirring in the sugars I microwave for 1 minute this ensures the crinkly top! Then, I also make sure I bake it just until set otherwise they’re cakey instead of fidgey.

    1. Thanks Jenna for that tip! Wish I’d read before cooking, as mine did not turn out crunchy on top, disappointed. I lost my recipe that looked like picture.

  119. 5 stars
These One Bowl Brownies came out SO good, and they are quick and easy to make! Thank you so much for this recipe!

  120. I made these with coconut oil instead of butter and I omitted the coffee and the chopped chocolate. They look delicious and fudgy. Tried the edges and just as expected. Delicious

  121. 5 stars
Oh Girl! These brownies are PHENOMENAL! I made a few modifications to them. Instead of using butter I used 1/2 cocoa butter and 1/2 coconut oil, and instead of 4 eggs I used 2 eggs and 2 flax โ€œeggsโ€. Everything else was just as written. They turned out AMAZING! Keeping this one in my favorites!

  122. 5 stars
Used light brown sugar instead of dark and didnโ€™t have parchment paper but still were delicious. I baked them for about 25 minutes in a med dark insulated pan. So fudgy and delicious.

  123. 5 stars
This is hands down the best brownie recipe I’ve ever tried. Not to mention easy! I .ade this for a crowd and everyone was asking for the recipe.

  124. 5 stars
These are delicious and so easy. I bake mine in a 9×13 glass pan and theyโ€™re perfect at 30 mins. At first glance I thought they were going to be cakey but they get plenty fudgy. A new go-to for brownies.

  125. Hi maria !! i have made this recipe several times and they are absolutely delicious, but i would really like to know how you get the cracky top, cause mine never turn out like that. Do you recommend mixing the butter, eggs and sugar until pale and fluffly? Or just until well combined?

  126. I have made the brownies twice and Iโ€™m very pleased with them. I had no expresso but they are wonderful even without it. This is definitely my go to for brownies from now on. Love them

  127. 5 stars
My family thinks these brownies are the best and I agree.
    Super easy and delicious.
Made just as recipe is written.
This is my new go-to brownie recipe.

  128. 5 stars
Absolutely delicious and so easy. I sprinkle with Malden sea salt after taking them out of the oven. My family loves them alone or as a partner with Jeniโ€™s ice cream!

  129. 5 stars
This is the ONLY BROWNIES recipe that I make! Itโ€™s the BEST!! I just learn that I’m intolerant to dairy so Iโ€™m wondering if I can used coconut oil ?? Hope so !

    1. I haven’t tried coconut oil, but I am sure it would be ok. Different flavor, but still good.

  130. 5 stars
I have made these easily 6 times. They are my absolute, go-to recipe for brownies! Thank you for sharing this recipe!

    1. this only has one cup of flour and a full cup of cocoa, which seems like a lot. It’s in a 9 x 13 pan. It doesn’t seem like enough batter to be in that large of a pan.

  131. 5 stars
Awwww disaster I doubled the recipe and I can’t get them to cook fully now. First time I made these THEY WERR PERFECT just regular amount above, everyone said they were amazing I couldn’t believe my luck. So then I decided to make twice as much. Hellllppppp

  132. 5 stars
This is a great recipeโ€ฆ.added white chocolate chips on top in place of chocolate chips which I did put in batterโ€ฆ.salted out of the oven just a bitโ€ฆbaked 26.5 minutes and they were perfect!

    1. 5 stars
As soon as you take the brownies out of the oven, pour chocolate chips over the top and wait a minute,โ€ฆ. Then spread around for easy chocolate frosting!

    1. 5 stars
I made these in a glass baking dish. Ended up increasing cook time by 10-12 minutes. They were awesome. My coworkers loved them.

  133. 5 stars
I’m not sure why I have never attempted homemade brownies before because these are considerably better than the boxed version! I had all of the ingredients on hand, and used Dutch-processed cocoa. I only used about half the amount of chocolate chips and they were plenty sweet and chocolatey. My whole family loved these, as is typically the case with Two Peas recipes. Thank you, Maria!!!

  134. 5 stars
DON’T HESITATE – JUST MAKE THESE. THEY ARE THE BEST BROWNIES!
Probably like most people here, we love brownies in our house. Through the years, I’ve made lots and lots of brownies but these are so darn good. Easy and scrumptious. I’ve baked them in a 9 x13 and a 9x x9 pan and highly recommend either option. I followed the recipe as written and wouldn’t change anything.

  135. 2 stars
Was very hopeful about this recipe and followed the directions to a T, even mixing the butter and sugars for two minutes by hand as to not get a cake-like texture. But, the recipe did not turn out for me, and I couldnโ€™t eat them because of the texture. Guess I will keep searching.

  136. 5 stars
Really chewy brownies and delicious! They are however quite rich, so cut them small..Thanks for the recipe.

  137. Made these following your recipe to a T and took almost an hour to bake to get the crumbles on the toothpick. They were still completely raw after 25 minutes. What do you think happened?

    1. Weird, I have never had that issue. Is your oven temperature correct? Every oven is different so it might take a little longer, but they should cook and not be raw.

    2. Having the same issue! Just made them. In oven for total of 55 minutes. Still wonโ€™t see.

  138. sounds scrumptious, do you think that after i mix the ingredients i can bake it in my breadmacihine? my oven is not working..thank you the BM temperature is 350degrees.

  139. I can not have leaving. And these are absolutely delicious. I make these for every event we go to. No one ever knows that it is missing. Thank you so much.

  140. These were delicious! I don’t have instant coffee powder, but I popped in a little leftover coffee and used mini chocolate chips instead of chopped chocolate. Probably the best homemade brownies I’ve ever had!

  141. 5 stars
Easy recipe and love that it comes together in one bowl- good when you have limited time. I thought I might have over baked them because the edges looked too done but they were perfect. I loved the addition of the espresso!

    1. Hi Nidhi! I have often used 1/4 cup applesauce or Greek yogurt in place of one egg in brownie recipes. They always make my brownies deliciously moist.

  142. 5 stars
These are the best homemade brownies, EVER !!! To make it easy on myself, i mix the ingredients together in one bowl. I begin by combining the dry items together: cocoa, salt and flour, then using a spatula, make a burrow in the middle of the bowl.

Then I combine the remaining wet ingredients, using a small whisk. Using the spatula, I combine both wet and dry ingredients, and pour into the pan.

They turn out delish each time . Thank you for this delicious recipe!

    1. 3 stars
These have a good taste, but are definitely not fudgy. This was more like a cake texture. The only thing I left out was the Espresso powder.

  143. 5 stars
These brownies are so rich they have been a favorite at my house and at church where I have shared them.

  144. 5 stars
I made these in my mini cupcake pans. Bad ideaโ€ฆ.. theyโ€™re SOOOO delicious I easily ate 4!! I love them in bite-size form.

  145. I needed a quick and easy chocolatey dessert so decided to make these. OMG they are the best brownies ever!!! I chopped up Reese’s peanut butter bar and sprinkled on-top, after I pulled them out of the oven… WOW absolutely delicious!!!

  146. 5 stars
I made this brownie and was immediately intrigued by the lack of leavening agent. Itโ€™s not an author oversight- they donโ€™t need it! Theyโ€™re very fudgy and rich. I omitted the chopped chocolate after making the batter and recognizing the richness. Iโ€™m sure the chopped chocolate would be delicious but they were phenomenal without it

    1. So glad you loved the brownies. I don’t use baking soda or powder in the recipe, it’s not necessary:)

  147. 5 stars
These have a shorter cook time than other brownies Iโ€™ve made. I overcooked them & they still came out delicious! Iโ€™ve bookmarked the recipe as our go to for brownies!

  148. My friend came up to me and, waving a brownie, said, โ€œThese brownies are killer!โ€ I have to agree. They are exactly what I have in my head when I think of brownies. This is far and away the best brownie recipe Iโ€™ve found. Iโ€™ll be making these regularly.

  149. 4 stars
Iโ€™ve made plenty of brownies from the box, but I wanted to try to bake them from scratch. Your recipe was easy to follow, which (as an amateur baker) I really appreciated. I baked the brownies for 25 minutes, and they were done when I got them out. They are delicious and fairly fudgy, but I never got the crackle top or the rich fudge flavor I was looking for. Iโ€™m not sure how I would adjust the recipe, if I make them again.

  150. 3 stars
Not our favorite. Chocolate-y for sure! Rick and dense, very moist. But maybe too fudgey for our tastes. And it seems like itโ€™s missing something, though I couldnโ€™t tell you what. Very easy to make though!

  151. 5 stars
Best brownie recipe ever! I was searching the Internet for a recipe and yours was the only one that called for a 9×13 so I went for it. Plus the ingredients and simplicity were factored in. Didn’t even last 24 hrs, my kids, husband and I gobbled them up! I did have to bake them 10 minutes longer, but I did use a glass pan, maybe that’s why.

  152. 5 stars
I am new to the blog and already a fan! I made these last night in a 8 x 11 glass pan so they would be thicker; glad I did. I used semi sweet chocolate chips instead of the chopped chocolate. These are a huge hit with my kids! Next up are the Oreo Brownies. Thanks so much.

  153. 5 stars
One of my granddaughters wanted brownies for dessert at our family cookout last night. I have to say, these are BETTER than store bought box brownies. They aren’t too sweet and, they are quick and easy.
This recipe will definitely be used in the future!!

  154. Made this in mini cake pans for a preschool baking class. Theyโ€™re a great one bowl recipe and the mini foil pans changed the bake time to 16 minutes.

  155. 3 stars
I tried this recipe and followed the recipe through and through. My batch or brownies came out very bitter. I donโ€™t know what went wrong or if they are supposed to be bitter, but I donโ€™t like them. I did try pairing caramel sauce and sea salt on top of them and they taste sweeter, which is what I expect from a brownie. I might try them with ice cream as well to help combat the bitterness.

    1. Maybe try a different brand of chocolate. Did you add the espresso powder? You can also leave that out.

  156. Hi Maria

Your recipe got me excited to try baking it
    I only have a 8 x 8 inch pan
How do I scale down your recipe?

Please advise on baking temp and time.

    Thank you so much.

    Jacq

  157. 3 stars
I followed recipe to a T and it came out super cakey, not crinkly top and not fudgyness to be found. Not sure what I did wrong.

  158. I don’t usually leave reviews, but I had to with these! My granddaughter and I made them a few weeks ago and they were divine! I love how dark chocolatey they are! 25 minutes was perfect! They have the best texture. Sooo fudgy

  159. These are the best brownies I have ever made. I replaced one cup of the cocoa powder with one cup of hot cocoa mix. It made them fabulous! Thank you for the recipe.

  160. These brownies were a hit. I made them for work and Iโ€™ve been asked to make them ever since. Now Iโ€™m getting orders from people to make them for the holidays and other occasions. Kept hearing the words, rich or very rich on the first batch and I wanted it them to be more kid friendly, so I left out the espresso powder and decreased the cocoa by half. I also swapped out the chocolate chips for walnuts or just left the batter plain without any extra chocolate chips, just to cut the richness a little bit. Everyone loves them. I would definitely recommend this recipe.

    1. 5 stars
Sounds like you overmixed. I took mine out at 30 minutes and let them sit overnight. They are very fudgy as proclaimed by my sons.

  161. 5 stars
I made these last night right before bed for my Christmas cookie boxes. I read all the comments so I was very very careful not to overmix. My son walked in and snatched one up before I could swat him away and proclaimed “Oooh. Fudgy!”

  162. This is our favorite brownie recipe! If I need a LOT of brownies, do you know how I should adjust the cooking time if I double the recipe and cook them in a half-sheet pan?

    1. Glad you love the recipe, if the batter is thinner and more spread out they will cook faster, so reduce the baking time. Check early to be safe.

  163. My husband and I made these brownies for Xmas eve and they were absolutely delicious. Moist, rich chocolaty goodness.i was attracted to this recipe because was easy and everything was mixed in one bowl. Also, Instead of expresso grinds I added some brewed coffee and walnuts, which means I had to cook them about 7 minutes longer. This is my new go to homemade brownie recipe.

  164. This is my go to brownie recipe! Comes out perfect every time. Iโ€™ve made them for myself and for gifts using the small loaf pans to give as a gift. The ONLY adjustment to the recipe I made was adding the coco powder in the first step with the butter to ensure it was incorporated while warm.

  165. Had excellent results making these brownies even with my adjusting the recipe to a lower sugar content.
Used only one cup of white sugar.
Replaced cocoa powder and chocate chips with 100 grams of 70% Lindt dark chocolate.
    Will make these again.

Mine didnโ€™t have a crackly top. I use make these as mini muffin brownies so I can edge pieces in each one (my favorite part) and this came out more cakey. I will try this again with less eggs and make a big batch again instead of muffin ones and see if that helps. I cooked for 30mins.

  167. Yum! These were so easy to make and a huge hit at my friendโ€™s party. I used extra dark chocolate chips in place of the chopped chocolate because itโ€™s what I had, which gave them a nice dark chocolate edge. They definitely have a notable salt taste from the kosher saltโ€”good if you like salted dark chocolate.

My husband just absolutely loved these! Sadly my dog didnโ€™t as much. Heโ€™s been acting a little weird since I gave him a piece

    1. Chocolate is poisonous to dogs you need to take him to the vet ASAP!! Please be careful ๐Ÿ™

Super cakey, to the point I wouldn’t really call these brownies. I followed the recipe and everything, I’m so disappointed. The flavor was nice though but they are VERY VERY VERRRYY sweet!

Meh, not a fan of these. Seemed a lil salty. Also like it was missing and ingredient. Was really looking forward to these, but a bit disappointed.

I made a half batch, and they came out great. I used semi sweet chocolate chips for the chopped chocolate and had to use salted butter and self-rising flour, which turned out fine – I just decreased the amount of additional salt. Husband and guests (and me!) really enjoyed them, none survived great, easy recipe!

Followed recipe exactly, 9×13 metal pan / 350 / 24 minutes / spray oil no parchmentโ€ฆ brownies were dense, super moist perfection with glossy top. Will definitely make again. โค๏ธ

I have been on the hunt for the perfect homemade brownies and I FINALLY found them! We are making a second batch today because my family cannot get enough of these. My husband has never liked homemade brownies because they donโ€™t get as fudge like as the boxes ones. He canโ€™t stop eating these! Thank you for this recipe!

I made these yesterday and they are so delicious!! I added dark chocolate morsels and that took it to chocolate heaven. So fishy and rich! Thanks for another winner recipe!

  176. 5 stars
These were so yummy! Nice and fudgy, the flavor was deep chocolate good. I did have to bake them about 5 extra minutes, but then they were perfect!

  177. 3 stars
Pretty yummy, but Iโ€™m gonna say my family thought 1 whole cup of cocoa was too much. Iโ€™ll try them again with 1/2 next time. But thanks for the recipe!

  178. 3 stars
These brownies are dry. If I make them a second time, I will substitute 1/2 canola oil for just 1/2 cup of the total butter.

  179. 5 stars
These are great! Turned out very good! I used half white sugar & half organic Sucanat cane sugar, also cut down by half cup of the sugar.
I broke up a Hershey symphony candy bar with almonds in it. Also addd a lot of walnuts!
Mine donโ€™t have a cracked top, I didnโ€™t over mix, maybe being I didnโ€™t use as much sugar & substitution I used. Either way theyโ€™re good. Thank you for the yummy recipe.

These come out perfect every single time! I only bake mine for about 20 min. It’s gotta be my oven but, wow! I added a scoop of protein powder to this batch tonight and it’s amazing! And the kids don’t even know they’re getting the extra proteins while enjoying these brownies!

27/03/2024 my son has been asking me for ages to have a go at making some brownies Iโ€™m not a confident cook so when I found this recipe I said go on then I will give it a go. Got a 9×13 brownie pan and all the ingredients as stated in the recipe followed the instructions right down to the cooking time and OMG they came out absolutely amazing. The top didnโ€™t crackle too much but the taste and texture was absolutely perfect my son was over the moon with them. And for my first attempt making brownies I was too Iโ€™ll definitely be making them again. Thank you for sharing your recipe.

Okay, my daughter and I loved these, but my husband hated them because of the salt. We girls love the salt in our chocolate goodies. If you don’t, i recommend dialing down the salt to 1/2 tsp of granulated salt mixed in with the flour. I made a couple of modifications, but they weren’t the kind that have a big impact, just personal tweaks. I like half coconut oil/half butter in my brownies (I melted it as the recipe called for.) I don’t keep brown sugar, so I used a scant 2 cups of white sugar and added a heaping tsp of molasses. I used half vanilla, half almond extract. Ghirardelli 70% dark chocolate chips instead of chopped chocolate. I added 1/4 extra cup of ditched dark cocoa and used Starbucks instant blonde espresso and doubled the amount. When I whipped the sugar with the melted butter and coconut oil I didn’t overwhelmed it, there were still some grains in there.

Iโ€™m a grandma and an experienced baker. My eight year old granddaughter is my apprentice and wanted to make brownies for her momโ€™s birthday by herself. I found this one bowl recipe and turned her loose. Wow! What a great brownie! Needless to say her mom loved them and so did everyone else! Fudgy and moist, the perfect brownie! Iโ€™ve made a lot of brownies in my life but this recipe is my favorite! Thanks

  184. 5 stars
Delicious and easy. Mine came out lighter than I would have liked but perhaps cos I creamed butter and sugar cos it looked strange otherwise. Definitely didn’t overmix final batter.
Still. For ease and yumminess 10/10.

  185. I made this brownie recipe and omitted the optional espresso powder. These are most definitely the best brownies Iโ€™ve ever made. My family absolutely loved them. Be Sure to follow the instructions closely. do not overbake. I also did not sprinkle flaky sea salt on them after they cooled. Enjoy

  186. Are there 225 calories in each brownie or in the whole tray? How many calories would you say 1 piece is?

  187. I am about to make these for my sonโ€˜s 10th birthday. Can I add sweeten condensed milk?

  188. 4 stars
I haven’t tried them yet they’re still cooling, but I left them in the oven for like almost 35 mins. At 25, the middle was like soup. At 30 mins, same thing. No crackle top and when toothpick inserted it comes out very wet. No crumbs. Is this normal?

    1. 5 stars
10/10! Baked these for a friends b day and they were delicious. I used all brown sugar and baked them for 10 more minutes. Starbucks copycat brownies but WAY BETTER!

  189. 2 stars
I really had high hopes for these. My kids and I made this after dinner because I was craving something sweet and chocolate. However, it was more biter than sweet. Brownie was moist and consistancy was great but not sweet like we wanted.

  190. 5 stars
Delicious! It’s now my favorite brownie recipe.
My oven bakes fast so only took 18 minutes at 325โฐ. I don’t use a toothpick. as soon as edges start to pull away from the pan they are done and will get firm while cooling.

  191. 5 stars
Loved it, satisfied my brownie cravings with the right combination of being cakey+fudgy. Will be saving this for sure :)Thanks for sharing!

  192. I made these brownies and followed the recipe as follows. However, I think they are too rich. I would reduce the cocoa of I make them again.

I’d been trying a few different brownie recipes. I even tried Katherine Hepburn’s brownie recipe, but it was WAY too dry because she liked to use just a little flour. This is by FAR the best homemade brownie recipe I’ve done! The brownies are FUDGY, CHOCOLATEY, crackly on the top but MOIST below! I used semi-sweet dark chocolate chips and mixed in some chopped walnuts. I sprinkled the top with Sea salt. These FLEW off my table – these are my go-to brownies for work, church, friends and family from now ON. Can’t go wrong! Thanks for sharing!

    1. Oh and let me add I used ground Gevalia dark roast coffee instead of the espresso powder (who has that on hand? lol!) and it gave a depth to the chocolatey flavor just from 1 tsp!

    2. you should try brown butter with your idea. really take it to the next level!
      much love and many blessings

The brownies are awesome! They’re fudgy inside, crispy on the outside and full of flavor. I will definitely make them again but probably use a bit less sugar, because I personally found it to be too sweet for my taste.

  195. 5 stars
fantastic…..I don’t understand why people are having issues. follow the steps, make sure oven is preheated. they come out perfect everytime. which I hate admit is often lol

My 18 year old daughter made these today, no modifications at all. She used Central Milling AP flour, King Arthur Double Dark Cocoa powder, King Arthur Espresso Powder, and Challenge unsalted butter. These were the best brownies Iโ€™ve EVER hadโ€ฆ. Absolutely delicious!!!

  197. 3 stars
Waiting for the brownies to cool, but I ended up taking these brownies out at 40 minutes. It was like soup when I took it out at 30 minutes!

These are amazing! I’ve made them several times and they are always a hit. They are best with real butter but the recipe works with vegan butter too. Thanks for an easy to make and easy to clean up delicious recipe!!!

Soooo good! Super chocolatey and crusty on the outside, the salt is a great addition!
We used Aero bars for chocolate

These are in the oven now.
    I used a 8 x 11 glass pan.
    I skipped all the butter.
    1/2 cup salted butter.
    1/2 cup vegetable oil.
    Extra vanilla extract.
    Pinch of coffee.
1 cup of chopped Reeseโ€™s cups scattered on the top.
    Hopefully these set up well.
Thanks for the one bowl brownie recipe.

Next time, I will skip the espresso. My three and five year old said the brownies tasted like coffee.. I think they are good. But they wonโ€™t touch them!

The best homemade brownie I have ever had! Love the dark chocolate flavor and texture! Definitely a keeper. Thanks!

These were the best brownies I ever made! They are moist, decadent and such a good chocolate flavor. I will make these over and over.
    Thank you Maria!

  204. Hi Maria, love your recipes but havenโ€™t tried this brownie recipe yet. Do I half the ingredients for an 8 inch square cake pan? Thank you .

  205. Wow! The family was impressed and inhaled the entire batch! I baked 25, then another 2 minutes. Super gooey delicious. Won’t worry if I bake till 30. I’ll definitely use this recipe for my future brownies. No crackle top, but my priority is flavor, and this delivered!

  206. 5 stars
These are the easiest & most decadent brownies Iโ€™ve ever made & tasted!
I bake for the love of it & take any goodies I do cook along to my work place, where they are always welcome.
Thank you for such an amazing recipe.

  207. 2 stars
Far too much sugar, they’re overly sweet.
Too much cocoa, gives a too powdery texture.
Better to use less or a better espresso because this one adds too much bitterness.

One other thing; how come the pos get a reply but the more critical comments don’t?
    Makes one think…

Just made these and they are perfection! I easily halved the recipe. I sprinkled with the few remaining Oreos I had in the cupboard and now they look like a special dessert. Mine were finished baking in 30 minutes at 350 degrees and are beautiful and flaky. Thanks for an easy recipe with ingredients I have in the pantry.

  209. 5 stars to the one bowl brownies- so easy and much better than the store bought mixes. I added walnuts to mine in place of chocolate chunks – a great recipe!!

  210. 5 stars
these are delicious, made them and used butterscotch morsels and don’t regret a thing. they’re very rich and sweet. I don’t have a sifter so I whisked the flour and cocoa in a separate bowl before adding to the wet mix. will definitely do these again.

Hi. I started putting these brownies together and realized I was out of vanilla extract. But I did have almond extract, and I do like almonds with chocolate. So I subbed almond extract in your recipe. Wow, it was delicious! These are wonderful brownies. I will make them again!!

  212. 5 stars
delicious brownies! I did change one thing I browned my butter (cooked around 5 min or just until a nice rich brown color) Instead of just regular melting the butter. deff try browning makes a huge difference and added a tablespoon and a half of vanilla other than that this is my new go to recipe!

  213. 1 star
Honestly, some of the worst brownies Iโ€™ve ever made. I followed the instructions to a T, yet there was no crackle top, was extremely dense, and had an almost powdery texture to it from the cocoa powder. It was also fairly bitter. I feel like Iโ€™d have to tweak it a ton if I wanted to make it again.

  214. 5 stars
LOVE LOVE LOVE! I have been craving a good brownie and so glad I found this recipe. Simple and easy. Only thing I did different is I halved the sugar, omitted the espresso, and added about 2tbs of water into the mix. Baked for 40min. DELISH!!!

  215. Are these brownies good with coffee? I plan to open a coffee shop and need to decide what to serve. Thank you for your help.

  216. 5 stars
Anyone who doesnโ€™t think these are the best brownies ever did something wrong making them. I followed the recipe exactly as written and they came out perfect. The baking time was accurate. Everyone who ate them remarked on their chocolate flavor, fudgey consistency, and said way better than a box mix. THANK YOU Maria for a winning recipe!

These are by far the best brownies Iโ€™ve ever had! Theyโ€™re are SO fudgey itโ€™s insane! Iโ€™ve tried so many different recipes over the years and this one is EXACTLY what I was looking for! Amazing! I added chopped up kinder Bueno chocolate inside and semi sweet and white chocolate chips on-top. Amazing!
