Key Ingredients
You’ll find the full list of ingredients in the recipe card below, but here are some ingredient notes before you get started.
- Oat flour: Make sure you use gluten-free oats if you need the cookies to be gluten-free. Oat flour is EASY to make at home, just put oats in the blender and blend. It’s that simple!
- Mashed Bananas: The bananas add moisture and a subtle sweetness without refined sugar. Use dark brown bananas for the best flavor!
- Nut Butter: I use creamy natural peanut butter, but almond butter will also work. Make sure you stir well before using.
- Chocolate Protein Powder: A scoop of protein powder gives the cookies a boost of protein. I use Clean Simple Eats protein powder (use code TWOPEAS for a discount), but you can use your favorite brand.
- Chia Seeds: Packed with omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and protein, chia seeds add a nutritional boost! Store them in the freezer so they don’t go rancid.
- Chocolate Chips: I like to use dark chocolate or semisweet chocolate chips. You can use Hu chocolate chips that only have 3 ingredients and are sweetened with coconut sugar. They are delicious too!
How to Make Healthy Chocolate Cookies
- Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Mix the wet ingredients. In a large bowl, use a fork to mash the ripe bananas until smooth. Add the nut butter, maple syrup, egg, and vanilla extract. Stir until well combined.
- Add the dry ingredients: Add the oat flour, chocolate protein powder, cocoa powder, chia seeds, baking soda, and salt. Stir until combined.
- Add the oats and chocolate chips and stir. Don’t over mix! If you want, you can also stir in some chopped nuts or dried fruit here.
- Let sit. Allow the cookie dough to sit for 10 minutes so the oats can soak up some of the moisture. It will thicken up a bit.
- Scoop the dough. Scoop the dough onto prepared baking sheet, about 2 tablespoons per cookie. You can use a cookie scoop or spoon. The dough will be moist.
- Bake the cookies for 10 to 14 minutes or until they’re set, but still soft in the centers.
- Cool. Remove the cookies from the oven and sprinkle the tops with a little flaky sea salt. Cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes and then use a spatula to transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely.
How to Store and Freeze
- Storing on the Counter: Let the cookies cool completely before storing. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days.
- Freezing: Place the cookies in a freezer bag or container and freeze for up to 3 months. To thaw, simply leave them at room temperature for about 30 minutes or microwave for a few seconds for a gooey chocolate cookies. The cookies are also VERY good frozen!
