My boys LOVE classic Italian meatballs, they are a very popular dinner at our house. They also love these Greek Turkey Meatballs. They’re full of veggies and herbs that give them an incredible flavor, but let’s not tell them they are filled with veggies. That is our little secret:)

Greek meatballs are delicious with a little tzatziki sauce and served gyro style. You can also serve them over rice or add them on top of a a salad. Greek Turkey Meatballs are also amazing for meal prepping. They’re just a win all around!

Greek Turkey Meatball Ingredients

  • Turkey– Instead of using lamb or ground beef, we use 93% lean ground turkey. Ground turkey is a great way to lighten up meatballs!
  •  Breadcrumbs– Use seasoned breadcrumbs for extra flavor. You can buy breadcrumbs at any grocery store.
  •  Zucchini– shred the zucchini and squeeze out any excess liquid. The zucchini will add moisture to the meatballs, making sure they aren’t dry!
  •  Spinach– finely chop the spinach, the kids won’t even know it’s there!
  •  Red onion– a must!
  •  Garlic– always use freshly minced garlic, not garlic powder.
  •  Feta cheese– feta cheese is a Greek staple and adds creaminess, saltiness, and deliciousness to the meatballs.
  •  Egg– for binding the meatballs together.
  •  Lemon zest– the pop of lemon is so nice!
  •  Herbs– fresh parsley and oregano. If you want to add in some fresh mint, that would be a good addition too!

How to Make Greek Turkey Meatballs

These turkey meatballs are baked instead of fried. Baking the meatballs is healthier, easier, and you get the same great taste!

  • Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Combine everything in a large bowl: ground turkey, breadcrumbs, zucchini, spinach, red onion, garlic, feta, egg, lemon zest, parsley, oregano, salt, and pepper. Give it a good stir with a wooden spoon or spatula. You want it all combined really well!
  • Scoop 2-tablespoon balls of mixture into your palm. I like to use an ice cream scoop or a large cookie scoop!  You can use kitchen gloves if you’d prefer not to have the raw meat on your hands. Roll them into balls and place them about 2 inches apart on the baking sheet!
  • Bake for 18-25 minutes or until the meatballs are cooked all the way through.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve the meatballs with a drizzle of Tzatziki Sauce and your favorite Greek sides! If you want to mix things up, you can also try my Avocado Tzatziki Sauce.
  • To make the meatballs into a gyro, take a warm piece of pita bread and add a few meatballs plus lettuce, tomato, onion slices, feta cheese, and a drizzle of tzatziki.
  • You could also serve the Greek Turkey Meatballs over a bowl of rice.
  • Add them into my Chopped Greek Salad or Greek Grilled Vegetable Bowls!

How to Store

Store the cooked meatballs in a sealed container in the refrigerator for 3 to 5 days.

The meatballs also freeze well. You can freeze the uncooked meatballs for 3-4 months. Place the uncooked meatballs on baking sheet, lined with parchment paper. Freeze for one hour, or until frozen, and then place in a freezer bag or freezer container. When ready to bake, preheat oven to 450 degrees F. Add a few extra minutes to the baking time.

Freeze cooked and cooled meatballs for up to 2 months. Reheat in the microwave or oven.

Ingredients
  

For the meatballs:

  • 1 pound ground turkey, 93% lean
  • ¾ cup seasoned breadcrumbs
  • ¾ cup shredded zucchini, squeeze out excess liquid
  • ¼ cup finely chopped fresh spinach
  • ¼ cup finely chopped red onion
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • ¼ cup crumbled feta cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • Kosher salt and black pepper

For serving:

  • Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
  • In a large bowl, combine the ground turkey, breadcrumbs, zucchini, spinach, red onion, garlic, feta, egg, lemon zest, parsley, oregano, salt, and pepper. Stir well with a rubber spatula or wooden spoon until well combined.
  • Using an ice cream scoop or large cookie scoop, scoop about two tablespoons of the mixture into your palms (you can wear kitchen gloves, if you wish) and roll it into a ball. Place the ball on the prepared baking sheet. Repeat with the rest of the mixture, spacing the meatballs out onto the baking sheet, about 2-inches apart.
  • Bake the meatballs for 18 to 25 minutes or until cooked through.
  • You can enjoy the meatballs with a drizzle of tzatziki sauce or make a gyro. To make a gyro, take a warm piece of pita bread and add 3 meatballs, lettuce, tomatoes, onion slices, feta cheese, and drizzle tzatziki sauce over the top. Serve immediately. You can also serve the meatballs with rice or on top of a Greek salad.

    Maria you have knocked this one out of the park. The flavors are so bright and fresh and you would never guess there were all of the vegies in it. I bought local fresh ground chicken and my oven quit just before I was going to bake them. I fried them in olive oil so they were really nice and crispy on the edges. My husband and I can’t wait to make them again but in the oven. I served them over rice with tzatziki sauce on the side and a greek salad. Thanks for creating this and sharing.

    Oh my gosh! I just made this recipe last yesterday and it was so good!! I made a half batch (using a whole egg, but it was okay) and used ground pork instead as it’s what I had on hand, but oh my gosh, the seasoning, the feta, everything just made these oh so delicious! I wanted to eat the whole try!! I wasn’t planning on having them yesterday, but ended up having a couple with dinner and they stole the show! Thank you for this fab recipe!!

    These are very good; my family loved them. I used kale instead of spinach, because that’s what I had on hand. I will add a touch more lemon zest next time; some (but not all) meatballs had a nice bonus of the lemon flavor which was a really nice surprise. Very tasty and a nice change of pace from meatballs with tomato sauce!
