Easy Whole Wheat Pizza Dough Recipe
Updated March 26, 2019
Easy Whole Wheat Pizza Dough-this is our favorite whole wheat pizza dough recipe! It is easy to make and makes a perfect pizza every time!
The other day my friend asked me if we had a good pizza dough recipe and I told her of course we do:) We love pizza! I sent her this pizza dough recipe. I wanted to send her our whole wheat pizza dough recipe too, but guess what? I never posted it on our site! Oops! I am so sorry we have been keeping our favorite whole wheat pizza dough recipe a secret. I didn’t mean too!
We had a mandatory pizza night so I could take pictures and get the recipe up:) I owed my friend and all of you our favorite recipe!
I love this pizza dough recipe because it is super easy and you really can’t mess it up! I promise! It makes a perfect pizza every time!
We like to use white whole wheat flour to give the dough a lighter texture and color, but regular whole wheat flour works too!
Caleb loves helping in the kitchen, especially on pizza night. He loves getting his hands dirty! He has tried to toss the pizza dough in the air, but he is not quite ready for that. Maybe in a few years:)
You can top your whole wheat pizza with your favorite toppings…veggies, meat, cheese, whatever your heart desires! This time we made one of our favorites, Caprese Pizza! I will share the recipe on Friday, so come on back!
You can also freeze this whole wheat pizza dough. After the dough rises, put the dough in a freezer bag, squeeze out the air, and freeze for up to three months. When you are ready to use, just let it defrost and you can roll it out! We like to always have a few pizza dough balls in the freezer for nights when we are craving pizza…which is quite often with a house of boys:) Homemade pizza is so much better than ordering pizza!
The next time you are in the mood for pizza, give our Easy Whole Wheat Pizza Dough recipe a try!
Easy Whole Wheat Pizza Dough Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 cup warm water 110 degrees F
- 2 1/4 teaspoons one ¼ oz packet Active Dry Yeast
- 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
- 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour we use white whole wheat flour
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1 1/2 teaspoons Kosher salt
Instructions
- In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Stir and let sit until the yeast starts to foam and bubble, about 5-10 minutes.
- Using the dough hook, turn the mixer on low and slowly add half of the flour, olive oil, honey, and salt. When flour is combined, add the remaining flour. Once dough starts to form, increase speed to medium. Mix for 3-5 minutes, until dough is well combined.
- Remove the dough from the mixer and place on a floured counter. Knead a few times to form a ball. Dough should be smooth and shiny. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover loosely with a towel, and let rise for 30 minutes.
- When ready to bake, preheat oven to 450 degrees F. Roll dough into a 14 inch round. Place on a pizza pan or pizza stone. Spread with desired sauce and toppings. Bake for 16-20 minutes or until crust is golden brown. Remove pizza from oven and let cool for 5 minutes before slicing.
- Note-this pizza dough freezes well. To freeze, place dough in freezer bag after it rises, making sure you squeeze out all of the air. Thaw before using. Will keep in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Man I wish my Caleb (my husband shares the name) was that helpful!;)
We are in major need of a pizza night, and the fact that this is whole wheat is my fav! Pinned!
I LOVE homemade pizza night and this dough recipe sounds/looks great!
I’ve been making the same dough recipe for a long while now- I’m ready for a change! I’m going to try this tomorrow night <3
Smart to put some honey in there. We love whole wheat pizza dough over here, but it’s been a while. Thanks for inspiring me to have a pizza night soon! ๐
Loooove homemade pizza!!
So excited for a good whole wheat pizza recipe! And freezable? Whoohooo!
that dough looks wonderful maria- and boy is Caleb CUTE!!
Love your little helper getting in on the action ๐
Pinned!
I’m going to have practice this one, for some reason mine never looks as good as yours. At least it will be a tasty practice!
Love pizza dough especially the whole wheat! Caleb is so cute ๐
I think we need some homemade pizza this weekend!
Great recipe! I love homemade pizza and pizza dough (in my opinion) makes or breaks a pizza! Pinned
Thank you so much for sharing this! Looks so easy. ๐ We make pizza for Monday night football so I’ll definitely have to give this a try!
And bookmarked! I’m always in the need for a good homemade pizza dough recipe!
Yummy! Do you have any tips for how to prepare this without a dough hook?
A good crust makes the pizza. I can’t wait to try this recipe.
Looks easy! Maybe I can skip buying dough at the grocery store next time….
Can you use all purpose flour with this too?
Freezing pizza dough is a great idea and makes making dinner a lot simpler and quicker!
Can I use this recipe in a breadmaker?
I need to make this now! Love that Caleb helps out in the kitchen, too cute!
Yes! Pizza dough always gets made in a double batch around here (eat one, freeze one), but the quest for the “just right” pizza dough has been unsuccessful so far… *runs excitedly to the kitchen to try this version* ๐
The thought of using yeast scares me. I always avoid any recipes that involve yeast. Do you actually check the temperature of the water to make sure it is 110 degrees? If so, what kind of thermometer do you use? Thanks so much! I love your site!!
I use a candy thermometer.
It’s really easy to use yeast…I was scared of yeast for a long time too! Just heat your liquid in a glass measuring cup in the microwave until you know it’s above 110 degrees. The trick is to put the water into another glass measuring cup and then put the thermometer in. Just watch the thermometer until it’s 105 – 110 degrees and add the yeast. Yes, it’s that easy! No fail, I promise. From a previous “no yeast” person too! You’ll be making all kinds of breads in no time – now I make whole wheat dinner rolls, cinnamon rolls, and breads! You can do it to!
Can’t help but smile seeing Caleb helping with the dough, so cute! Nothing beats homemade pizza dough!
I made this pizza dough tonight with my 3 year old and it was positively delicious! Easy to make and a soft airy crust. Mine cooked a lot faster than 16-20 minutes but I am at a high altitude so that’s likely why. Thanks again!!!
Can you make this dough without using a stand mixer and dough hook? I don’t have either! Thanks!
I have to try this! Sunday is usually our pizza day, so what better to try this recipe next time! Thanks for sharing!
Do you think this dough would turn out okay if done by hand (not with a mixer)?
Yes!
Could I put it directly in the fridge and save 1-2 days? Would I need to cook longer or bring to room temp before baking? Thanks!
You can put it in the fridge. Let it come to room temperature before rolling out.
Just made this tonight. Very good. I was very proud of myself. ๐
My dough came out dry and kind of crumbly. Thoughts? Could I have added more water?
Could I double this recipe or would you suggest making it in two batches?
Thanks!
any tips for doubling (or tripling) this recipe?
If you have a large mixer, it should be fine to double the recipe or you can make the recipe in separate batches.
My go-to pizza dough recipe. We don’t seem to have white whole wheat flour in Australia, so I found its best to just use half plain and half whole wheat flour in my dough. Versatile recipe, I especially love the addition of honey. Thank you.
I am so glad you like our pizza dough recipe!
I made the dough this evening and it turned out great! I doubled the batch and used the dough cycle on my bread machine. I made six mini pizzas with about half the dough. I cooked the minis plain for about five minutes, then we decorated them and cooked for about 15 minutes more. It is the best pizza dough I have ever made! Thank you!!
Glad you like our pizza dough! It is our favorite too!
Thanks for sharing this recipe. I pinned it to my recipes I want to try board. It sounds easy enough to make, and I think my family would like it.
Is this dough able to be made one day ahead and kept in the fridge overnight?
Came out soooper
thanks a lot
If I make this the night before, its ok to keep in the fridge and make sure its room temp when I’m ready to make the pizza?
Yes! Enjoy!
When you say white whole wheat are you talking about wheat you’ve ground yourself or bought at the store.
I buy it at the store.
I tried this dough recently and it made for some delicious pizza! ๐
Can I swap Bread Flour for the Whole Wheat Flour? ย I only have enough Bread Flour. ย Would it be equal substitutions?ย
I haven’t tried bread flour, but equal should work!
My husband and I love this pizza dough! It is so quick and consistently delicious. We top it with green peppers, spinach, sausage, and thinly sliced tomatoes.. yum yum!
I don’t have a pizza mixer so how would I do it otherwise?
how long does it take to thaw? do you thaw in the fridge?
I made this recipe. I used coconut sugar and maple syrup. Came out great. Thank you.
Hi! I made this today and for some sad reason, it never came together for me. ๐ The dough stayed crumby and dry… I used white whole wheat flour. Any thoughts on why it seemed so dry? Thanks!
Sorry! I have never had the dough be dry. Did you add too much flour?
sounds like your yeast was off and didn’t foam up after 15 minutes this is because the dry active yeast was old / aged close to a few months before or after its expiration date on package .. try my
mix you’ll like it if you can make real hand tossed / slapped pizza on a screen and not a pan..
my mix should be posted here.
its a 50/50 mix of bread flour and whole grain flour blended together
I did it with bread flour and brown whole wheat flour 2 cups of each a 50/50 pre mix / blend dry in bole then
2 cups of warm water 2 table spoons of sugar 1 pack = 1 table spoon of active dry yeast mix both let it foam up 10 to 15 minutes
2 to 2 1/2 table spoons of canola oil
.5 tea spoon of salt
mix with dough hooks or by hand which you will do once it starts forming up to finish it up then kneed the dough to completion.. I roll mine out over big cutlery board dusting it with flour .. roll out until nice and smooth and form into a ball.. you can cut it in equal half’s since this is enough for 2 dough balls and I use a scale to weigh it,. the two balls are good enough for either 14 or 15 inch pizza screens since I have a 14’in one it comes out good..
then put one in fridge other freezer in containers depending out if you want to use both NOW allow
24 to 40 hours of Proofing time for unfrozen dough patty Yes its best to use the next day to allow it to
properly formant slowly in the fridge .. for frozen take it out for 2 or so hours for defrost then into the Fridge to finish Proofing,.
Pre=heat oven to 450-475 degrees this all depends how your ovens personality.
preparation of pizza: get your sauce and cheese out.. I use 5 Oz of mozzarella and 3 Oz of white ny cheddar cheese .. off of the cheese grater ,. mix / stir it together,.
Finger dock out your dough lightly use a roller to smooth it out a little .. hand slap / toss into size place on screen.. also flour dust the screen to prevent it from sticking to screen. sauce up.. add cheese and what ever toppings to it , bake it and enjoy .
bake time are from 9 to 15 minutes all depends on how your oven acts and works
This was good and so easy. I wish I knew how to make it thinner.ย
This sounds amazing! Could I make the rolls ahead of time, place in pan, cover and refrigerate?
Sorry, wrong section to post in, I am wondering about using this dough for your pizza roll recipe and making them ahead of time.
Sure!
I’m looking forward to using this recipe to make your recipe of pizza rolls.
Absolutely love this pizza recipe. Itโs the only one I use. I make it every Friday night, my husband and kids love it. โโโ Iโve also done it for other members of the family and they canโt believe how amazing and authentic the pizzas turn out
Iโve been using a shop bought pizza sauce but would love to make my own.
Glad you love our recipe!
Can I prepare this dough a few hours in advance and leave it out?
After many failed attempts with pizza doughโฆโฆ This recipe was perfect!!!! Iโm very picky when it comes to pizza, and this is now my go to recipe! Thank you so much!!!
Oh my heavens. I cannot believe I found this site and this recipe. You have made my day. I too lived in Italy with so many fond memories. I was a child when my father took a job with Pirelli. Then there were the Detroit days and a lot of waiting in line at Buddyโs for the best pizza ever. You have sparked a lot of interest for me. Thank you.
I love colorful recipes indeed, and this pizza is absolutely flavorful!
Love this so good, our family really enjoyed itโฆ saved it to one of my pins for pizza night! thanks!
Can you use whole grain whole wheat flour? If so, does the ratio ย of flour change? Thanks!ย
(Love the recipe anyway but I have a whole lot of the above in my cabinet)ย
Yes!
I’ve made it twice and both times my cheese gets burnt. Any suggestions as to why?
This is my go-to recipe for pizza. It is so good. Thank you!
This dough tasted great and was easy. The best recipe that Iโve tried. I used a pizza stone and used my convection bake @ 425 for the last 2 minutes, so that the edges were golden.
Glad you liked the recipe!
Hi,
Weโve made this many times and love it!
Could you give a nutritional breakdown for the dough?
Thanks!
Can you use rapid rise instant yeast for this recipe? Itโs the only kind I could find in the store..
Yes, that is fine.
Using your instant yeast, did you put it directly into the flour and mix? I know active dry yeast has to be activated but instant does not. How were your results ?
Can the dough be mixed by hand? (We donโt have a stand mixer).
Yes, that is fine! You will get a little workout:) Enjoy!
Worst recipe, the whole pizza fell apart.
Best simple pizza recipe
My grandson love ! I have made with whole wheat flour bread flour and white flour never fails always a hit !
This was great!
Low-sodium diet here. Made this recipe with no salt and subbing extra honey for sugar. Worked great! Topped with homemade no-salt pizza sauce (spicy and sweet), homemade no-salt pork tenderloin sausage (very lean, much garlic/onion/cayenne), and fresh mozzarella slices (place on pizza about 1/3 of the way through the bake). Crunchy thin crust, very flavorful pizza. DO NOT forget to top crust with olive oil before applying toppings (or the sauce may soak the crust, making it soggy) and preheat your pizza stone with the oven for a thorough crust cook.
Hi – what does this mean pls: 2 1/4 teaspoons one ยผ oz packet Active Dry Yeast??
Thanks!
2 1/4 teaspoons yeast, which is one packet of yeast.
Can I do this by hand? Or hand mixer?
Yes!
