Creamy Tomato Orzo Soup
Updated March 26, 2019
Do you have a sugar hangover from Valentine’s Day? I feel like I’ve been hit by the sugar train. I don’t know if it was the Cannoli Stuffed French Toast, the Chocolate Turtle Cookies, or all of the desserts we ate at Deer Valley. I need a sugar break, at least for a few hours:)
This Creamy Tomato Orzo Soup is just what the doctor ordered. Especially since I am still thawing out from our ski trip. I need a warm bowl of Creamy Tomato Orzo Soup! And don’t worry, we will post about our Deer Valley trip soon. We had a ton of fun!
This is hands down my new favorite soup. Josh is probably sick of me talking about it. I just can’t believe how good it is. I usually don’t toot my own horn, but I had to with this soup. It is too good to not talk about. I feel bad that I have been missing it all of my life. I am going to have to make up for lost time by making it every week.
I love this Creamy Tomato Orzo Soup for many reasons. It is easy to make, and when I say easy, I mean EASY! You can have this soup on your table in less than 30 minutes. No joke!
It is also good for you. Usually, when you see the word creamy, it doesn’t mean healthy. I promise I am not lying. The creamy part of this soup comes from Greek yogurt. There is no heavy cream involved at all. I stirred in plain Greek yogurt to create a creamy texture. It is CHO good!
I also added in orzo pasta to bulk the soup up. And good tomato soup has to have fresh basil, it’s a must! I love everything about this soup. It is creamy, satisfying, and warms the soul!
Creamy Tomato Orzo Soup is my new favorite soup. Have I told you that yet? ๐ Ok, I will stop talking about it, as long as you promise me you will make it. Go now! And tell all of your friends:)
Creamy Tomato Orzo Soup
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1/2 cup chopped onion
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 2 bay leaves
- 3-15 ounce cans diced tomatoes
- 1-15 ounce can vegetable broth
- 1 teaspoon brown sugar
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil
- Dash of crushed red pepper flakes
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
- 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 1 cup cooked Orzo pasta we use whole wheat orzo
Instructions
- 1. In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook until tender, about 5 minutes. Stir in the bay leaves.
- 2. Add the tomatoes and vegetable broth. Stir in the brown sugar and fresh basil. Season with red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper, to taste. Simmer on low for 15 minutes.
- 3. Remove the bay leaves from the pot. Use an immersion blender to blend the soup (or blend the soup in a standing blender and return to the pot). Stir in the Greek yogurt until well combined. Stir in the orzo pasta. Serve warm.

Youve combined two of my favorites! Tomato soup and orzo. I actually got sick yesterday and had no sugar :(- i need a makeup vday!!
Yes, I feel like a sugar hangover! Made chocolate chip cookie bars for my Husband to take to work, but he decided to take one row of them, so when I came home there was the pan of sweet chocolate chip cookie bars! Well I ate about 4, maybe a smidge more pieces! So I am feeling guilty and on a sugar high! lol The soup is a fantastic way to get back on track! Love that it is made with orzo pasta and greek yogurt! Fab dish!!
Umm this looks and sounds amazing. I love when you can create a super simple soup and then become addicted to it! I’ve done that now a few times!
My dad just made this for us and it was excellent!
Cannot wait to try it with the yogurt as he used cream….
He also slightly blended the soup
There’s nothing more comforting than a bowl of creamy tomato soup – my boys love it, and I love your healthy twist of adding Greek yogurt.
No sugar hangover here, but I may never boil a ravioli again. Baked (heart-shaped, cheese-filled) ravioli was a revelation.
This soup looks like an excellent way to use some of the tomatoes I canned in the fall–thanks!
My husband absolutely loves tomato soup and I just learned that fact about two months ago. I will try this out for him. Love the orzo!
I love the sound of orzo in this, wonderful!
Can you cook the orzo in the soup, rather than separately? It would be nice to have one less pot to wash!
You sure can!
Great idea using Greek yogurt instead of cream!
I would really like this for lunch today!
This soup looks delicious! Thanks for posting. How do you think quinoa would taste in place of orzo?
I haven’t tried quinoa. The texture will be different, but if you like quinoa, I am sure it would be great!
This soup looks so cozy- exactly what I want to eat today!
This looks so great! I don’t have orzo…wonder if perhaps couscous could replace it? Or maybe go classic with rice?
You could use rice if you don’t have orzo. Enjoy!
This sounds wonderful! I canned quarts and quarts of tomatoes this summer and have been looking for the perfect tomato soup recipe to use some of them. I don’t have any orzo so I think I’ll sub israeli couscous. Can’t wait to try it this weekend. ๐
yum! i love a great tomato soup and i love that you have orzo in it for a more hearty and filling dish!!
I love tomato soup! Looks great!
Just curious if the yogurt curdles in the soup…I know it doesn’t affect taste when it does but can be kind of…um…funny looking when it does! I like the addition of the yogurt and plan to try the soup!
The yogurt blended right in. Look at the photos in the post to see what it looks like:)
I love the pasta added in here! Nice touch…
Love this – you have the best ideas, Maria!
Looks super hearty and delicious
I could eat tomato soup every day! Great idea to use Greek yogurt instead of cream, I bet it’s a nice touch!
Creamy tomato soup without cream? I love it!
this looks great! will definitely try this recipe out
Love this idea! This soup sounds awesome!
Love that you used Greek yogurt. I’ve been subbing it for recipes with sour cream lately and I always love how things turn out. Looks delicious!
What a great idea adding orzo into this. I haven’t tried making tomato soup using greek yogurt either–can’t wait to try this out!
Tomato soup is my favorite kind. ๐ This looks wonderful – I’ve never added orzo to it before!
What a great idea! So filling and comforting!
orzo and soup mixed together! I bet it is good!
What a lovely looking soup, so warm and comforting on these cold winter days.
Such a lovely, hearty soup for warming to the bone this winter! Great recipe!
Oh, this sounds so good, Maria. The perfect thing to help you thaw off after a ski trip!
am always in need of a good detox soup, especially one that looks as healthy delicious as this!
Such comfort! And I love the idea of adding Chobani to it!
This looks SO good! Does it reheat ok? I’m the only soup water in my household…
It sure does! Ate some for lunch yesterday!
Soup eater… Silly auto correct
This looks so good, Maria!! So comforting.
Looks amazing! I love healthy alternatives to the classic comfort food.
Deliciousness! And I love adding yogurt or coconut cream to thicken soups without the added calories!
I am making this tonight and cannot wait!
I love orzo & I am sure it is great in this soup! Loved hearing from you at the BYB Conference this weekend! Thanks for the food blogging tips ๐
Can you use fresh tomatos or is canned the only way to go? Want to make this tonight, looks good!!!!
You can use fresh tomatoes. Enjoy!
Tomato soup is pure comfort food and this one looks amazing!
You have out done yourself with this fast and easy soup.
I have loved all your recipes and so appreciate your blog.
Keep up the good work
This looks great. I can’t wait to make it. I love the idea of using greek yogurt to add the creamy texture. I think that I’ll use ravioli or tortellini in my version, which my kids would love. Thanks!
Looks delish! I tried buying the ingredients so I could make this, but couldn’t find Orzo in my local grocery store. Is there a store that usually carries it? Is it usually in a section other than the pasta section? Or did I just totally miss it? ๐
I never have trouble finding it. It is always right by the pasta. We sometimes buy it in the bulk bins too.
looks yummy! planning on trying it tonight! would a dash of lemon juice throw off the flavor too much? something about lemon & orzo seems to go together for me…
You can add some lemon juice. I think it would taste good!
maria, made this wednesday night for dinner. enjoyed by all. :0) thanks for the easy, healthy recipe!! (and yes, it heated up fine for dinner last night…)
this sounds delightful! i am going to try this recipe out on wednesday….will report back ๐
Looks awesome! It’s been on my “to make” list for awhile. I finally put it on my dinner menu for this week and I’m excited to try it out!
I just made this soup and it is delicious. I had all of the ingredients in the house except for the fresh basil–so I substituted dried and it is still delicious. And very simple! Thanks
I LOVE creamy tomato soup, but never tried it with orzo and yogurt in it before! Sounds like a perfect combination! I never add sugar to soups, is there a special reason why you use sugar in this tomato soup?
The sugar cuts the acid in the tomatoes and Josh doesn’t like the “tang” of yogurt, so I added in a little sugar. You can always leave it out!
What a great idea to use orzo, it looks amazing! will def be trying it out!
Made this last night but added abc pasta to make it fun for my son! Very easy and tasty!
Made this today for my family and I thought my picky kids (ages 4, 3 and 2) won’t eat it but nope. They ate every last drop; even my husband was amazed!!!
Thank you so much for the recipe.
You are welcome! Glad you liked the soup!
This soup is my new favorite! I roasted my own tomatoes, so I only needed one can of diced. I splurged and used heavy cream instead of Greek yogurt, and it was delicious!
Just made this for lunch – totally delicious – thank you for sharing the recipe!
Just made this! Delicious and easy!
I just found your blog and love, love, love it. So much good stuff to try!! Do you think this could be frozen (because of the yogurt) and the orzo added when it’s actually served so as to not get so glumpy (my made up word for too thick with noodles, pasta etc.)?
Is it unwise to use chicken broth instead of vegetable broth? I have only chicken ๐
My boyfriend was recently put on a low cholesterol diet, so I’ve been struggling to find recipes that are heart-healthy without making us feel like we’re depriving ourselves. This cozy comforting soup was JUST the ticket! My guy is a firm believer that soup is not a meal, but the orzo in this soup makes it so hearty and filling that he devoured it and never once complained. I just loved this soup; it’s fast and easy and will become a staple in our house.
Just found your blog and loving it
What would you substitute to make it dairy free?
You can leave out the Greek yogurt or use dairy free yogurt.
This is one of my favorite lunches and I have passed it on to everyone I know! Does anyone know the calories per serving ? Thank you!
I’m making this for lunch today! Just wanted to make sure, I don’t drain the tomatoes before adding do I? Thanks!
This was delicious! How much per serving would you say?
Making this today for the second time! I cook the orzo in the soup after its blended, one less pot! So yummy! thanks!
This is the perfect reason to use my new immersion blender!! Thanks for the recipe!
I use crushed tomatoes instead of diced…. saving myself the immersion blender step. Works and tastes great!
Oh….this was the best Tomato soup we have had it was definately delicious and the fact that it didnt have those calories there made us enjoy it more.
I made this for dinner tonight. Great soup and very easy. Have you ever frozen leftovers or would the yogurt make that a bad idea?
Thank you for the weekly meal plan. ๐ I made this tonight and it was delicious, despite the fact that I used crushed tomatoes instead of diced tomatoes without realizing until I had already dumped it in. Very satisfying meal and came together quickly. Would definitely make this again.
This was the best soup I’ve made in a long time!! Great recipe!!!!! Thank you!
This was delicious!!!! I had to use up some full fat (sorry) plain Greek yogurt and this did the trick. It did make alot – can or do you recommend freezing some? wondering since it is a creamy soup. Thanks for the recipe = first time visitor here!
Maria,
With the weather cooling down, I’ve been on a soup kick! I’m a picky eater but love tomato soup and this seems like a great spin-off. I made homemade chicken noodle soup last night and am going to try this recipe out this weekend. Thank you for making a simple soup that will please my picky taste buds!

The family just got done eating this one. I used heavy cream since I don’t have any yogurt on hand. Served it with grilled cheese. A big hit! Thank you for another recipe to bring my family to the table.
You are welcome!
Do you know how large each serving is? Looks delicious!
about 1 cup
I didn’t have any plain Greek yogurt, but I had fat free sour cream and it was still awesome. Will try with Greek yogurt next time. It’s hard to find a tomato soup that doesn’t taste like marinara sauce, so this is perfect! Add a grilled cheese for a great diner. Thanks for your hard work!
Think it would be okay to freeze this soup and reheat it… or will it curdle because of the yogurt?
I haven’t tried it, but I think it would be fine. Let me know if you try it.
This looks awesome and I’m going to make it as soon as the weather cools off some. I would like very much to know the nutrition information, I have to limit sodium, potassium and phosphorus. I’m going to make it anyway but the nutritional profile would be so helpful! Thank you
This soup is delicious! A family favorite!
My Favorite tomato soup!
Can you just use crushed tomato rather than diced?
Yes!
Can this soup be frozen.
Wowie!
This was delicious!
I didn’t use bay leaves or pepper flakes (because we don’t like it too spicy) and it was fabulous!
A definite keeper in my recipe file!
