Banana Nutella Swirl Cake with Nutella Frosting
Updated March 26, 2019
The brown bananas on the counter got me again. They always sneak up on me! I made a loaf of Buttermilk Banana Bread, but still had three bananas on the counter staring me down. They were begging to be used. I decided to make a Banana Nutella Swirl Cake with Nutella Frosting. Bananas and Nutella are a match made in heaven and this cake certainly is heavenly!
The banana cake is as easy as they come. You probably have all of the ingredients on hand. The bananas and Greek yogurt make the cake super duper moist. I swirled Nutella into the cake. Oh, yes I did! Best decision ever! And I didn’t stop there, when the cake was cooled I topped it with a creamy Nutella frosting. I also added sprinkles because they are just fun! I think we all need more sprinkles in our lives.
If you are a banana and Nutella fan-I really hope you are, make this Banana Nutella Swirl Cake with Nutella Frosting. I am sure it will become a favorite cake recipe. It is easy and is great for birthdays, potlucks, or every day dessert. Yes, we need dessert every day!
And if you are ready for fall flavors, you have to try our Pumpkin Nutella Snack Cake. It’s kind of awesome too:)
Banana Nutella Swirl Cake with Nutella Frosting
Ingredients
- For the cake:
- 2 cups all-purpose Gold Medal flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter at room temperature
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup plain Greek yogurt I used Chobani 0%
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3 ripe bananas peeled and mashed (to equal 1 cup)
- 1/2 cup Nutella
- For the Nutella Frosting:
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter at room temperature
- 1 cup Nutella
- 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 2-3 tablespoons milk
- 1/2 teaspoon hazelnut extract optional
Instructions
- 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9x13 pan and set aside.
- 2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
- 3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until creamy and smooth, about 3 minutes. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the yogurt and vanilla extract. Mix in the mashed bananas.
- 4. Gradually add the dry ingredients and mix until flour disappears. Spread cake batter evenly into the prepared pan. Swirl the Nutella into the cake using a knife of toothpick.
- 5. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow cake to cool completely.
- 6. While the cake is cooling, make the Nutella frosting. In the bowl of a stand mixer, beat the butter and Nutella on high until smooth. Slowly add the powdered sugar, ¼ cup at a time. Beat on high until powdered sugar is incorporated. Add the milk and hazelnut extract, if using. Beat until frosting is smooth and desired consistency. If you need to add more milk, add a little bit at a time.
- 7. Frost the cake with Nutella frosting. Cut into squares and serve. I added sprinkles for fun!
