Baked Zucchini Fries Recipe

These Baked Zucchini Fries are a healthy alternative to traditional French fries. Utilize your garden zucchini and make these baked zucchini fries as a great side to any meal or a fun snack!
Zucchini Fries – A Healthy Alternative
I am not a French fry kind of gal. I love baked sweet potato fries, but the deep-fried French fries don’t appeal to me. I had some zucchini that needed to be used, so I decided to try baked zucchini fries.
I asked Josh if he wanted some of my fries and he turned up his nose. I was kind of surprised because he loves baked sweet potato fries too and most vegetables. He didn’t like the idea of baking zucchini and calling them fries though. They sounded “too healthy” to be good. So I went on my merry way preparing the zucchini fries. He decided to make some zucchini fries too-but he fried his in olive oil on the stove.
Taste Test: Fried vs. Baked Zucchini Fries
When we sat down to eat dinner together, he asked if he could try one of MY healthy fries. I already tasted one, so I knew they were downright delicious, so of course, I shared:) He tasted one, and then another and another. He loved them! He thought my baked zucchini fries were much better than his fried fries. Ha! The healthy fries win! Yahoo!
If you are looking for a healthy alternative to fries, give these zucchini fries try. We dipped them in a homemade marinara sauce. You can use store-bought if you wish. These baked zucchini fries make a great side to any meal or a fun snack! Don’t forget about this recipe-I know it will come in handy when you have summer zucchini growing out your ears:)

Baked Zucchini Fries
Ingredients
- 3 medium zucchini sliced into skinny sticks
- 2 large egg whites beaten
- 1/2 cup whole wheat bread crumbs we make our own
- 2 T grated Parmesan cheese
- 1/4 tsp dried basil
- Pinch of dried oregano
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425°. Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray. Set aside.
- In a small bowl, beat egg whites with a fork until frothy.
- Put the breadcrumbs, basil, oregano, garlic powder and cheese on a plate-I used a pie tin. Mix well.
- Dip the zucchini sticks in the egg whites and then into the bread crumb mixture, make sure all sides get coated well. Place the sticks on the prepared baking sheet. I did the sticks one by one.
- Bake at 425° for about 20 minutes or until golden brown and a little crispy. I turned over the fries half way through. Serve warm. We like to dip ours in marinara sauce.

I love love love zucchini fries! Fried zucchini is one of my favorite restaurant appetizers, but it’s always so soaked with oil that they get soggy- I love the baked alternative so much better 🙂

I tried zucchini fries for the first time last summer and they were wonderful!! I had totally forgotten about them till I read your post. Zucchini fries and sweet potato fries are always a win over regular fries!
Unlike you, I AM a french fry girl. LOVE them. One of my all time favorite foods. But I like my veggies too and I think these look fantastic! I’m wishing I had some summer zucchinis right now 🙂
I am not into true french fries either, but any vegetable which I can bake into a “fry” or a “chip” – that’s another story 🙂

Love baked zucchini fries, too! So easy and so much more healthy than fried.
I love French fries (and not because I am French)… but any other fries are welcome, especially with healhy veggies. It’s another way to serve vegetables to my children and that’s a great idea! They love Kale chips so I’m sure they’ll love zucchini fries!
i’m not all about french fries either–i always sub out for something else. if zuke fries were on the menu, you’d better believe i’d head straight for ’em. great post, maria!

I tried to make zucchini fries once and all the bread crumbs fell off… maybe because I was using panko? I think I’ll try these with homemade bread crumbs and see if that helps. I love sweet potato fries too!

I always say that frying makes just about any veggie taste better. Fried zucchini was an early way to get me to eat zucchini as a child.
I think I could definitely get into having them baked up nice and crispy though. Lots of good flavors going on here with the garlic and basil. I love doing oven sweet potato fries too.
These are a great alternative…although I am so guilty of enjoying full fat french fries!
I do love fried foods but when/if I can avoid frying without sacrificing taste, then I will bake as you’ve done here too.
Love zucchini fries. We usually make them with a cornmeal/ww flour crust. But, breadcrumbs are a nice idea too. Will have to try that sometime.
I made these for my parents last summer and they were gone within minutes! A definite hit if I do say so myself. there’s something about that breading that makes them absolutely delightful.

I made these last night. My kids (ages 2 & 4) were my sous chefs and so we made our first batch with everything according to the recipe, but we used panko bread crumbs instead of whole wheat. For some reason we had still had half a bowl of zucchini left, but we ran out of the breading mixture. So we made a second batch of breading mix, except this time we used the whole wheat. Both of the batches were delicious! We also made your marinara sauce and had quite a bit left over, so that will turn into a lovely sauce for a homeade pizza!

I love those fries. Been looking for a good baked zucchini fry recipe for a while now. My 14-year old claims to NOT like zucchini. Let’s see what he thinks of these. BTW, do you think a whole egg would work just as well? I don’t have the heart to toss out the yolk!

I made these tonight. My 2 year old (and I) loved them! However, I didn’t think they were crispy enough after 20 minutes. I let them bake on one side for 20 minutes, flipped them and baked them for 15 more minutes and they were fantastic! And I agree with Tristan, I ran out of bread crumbs after 2 zucchinis and had to make more for the 3rd zucchini. I also needed 2 baking sheets to fit all the fries. The flavor balance was really great and I didn’t add any salt.
I know I already mentioned it on Twitter, but I made these for dinner last night and we loved them! I put the breadcrumb mix into a baggie, added the zucchini after it had been dipped in egg and gave it a shake because I was short on time. It seemed to work pretty well! Can’t wait to make them again 🙂

I have made my zuchinni almost like this for years…Most of the time mine are cut into slices or circles, not the shape of frys.
We really like them this way. About the only thing I leave out is the oregano.
These are delicious! I just made them and I’m munching on them with a little chipotle mayo. I still have some of the bread crumb mixture and zucchini left so I’ll make more tomorrow 🙂 The only thing I might try different next time is to use panko bread crumbs to make it a little bit crunchier. Unless I didn’t leave them in the oven long enough. I guess I’ll find out tomorrow. Thanks for the recipe 🙂

These were delicious! I’ve just recently discovered your website and I’m a convert. You’ve got tons of great ideas- thanks! One question: dipping and dredging the zuke fries took forever (my 1 & 3 year olds were all over the place as I went one at time with the fries) until finally I just had to go faster and then the breadcrumb mixture didn’t coat as evenly or at all. Is there any faster way?
That is the way I do it. You can try shaking them in a bag?

Thanks for the recipe! Just before taking them out of the oven I sprayed the fries with canola oil cooking spray which added a nice crisp. Keep the summer vegetable recipes coming please!!!

Great recipe – mine turned out delicious! The Parmesan cheese made the breading just that right amount of salty. I just wish I’d cut my zucchini strips skinnier, since (being zucchini) the fries naturally got moist and mushy as they cooled.
Baked is the way we always make it! Just as good as fried without the guilt 🙂
I used ground flax seed instead of bread crumbs. I could eat a million of these. So good.
Here in the UK we have a chain of burger restaurants called Byron and they have ‘courgette fries’ on their menu. They look just like this but unfortunately they deep fry them. Great to find a recipe for a baked version and with the addition of some herbs too, I’ll be sure to try these soon!
Just made these, they’re great! Just make surfe you put enough oil on the pan (not too much, not too little) to make sure the breading doesn’t stick to the pan!
Are the breadcrumbs fresh or toasted after crumbling bread slice?
So completely delicious! We used Panko in place of bread crumbs. They were wonderful!
Decided to change things up for dinner and boy was this the star of the meal!! 100% recommend
Made these tonight, along with another person’s recipe for zuc fries. This recipe was the better of the two. Four stars: I had to double all the spices, as we could barely taste any. But, once that was done, the zuc fries were tasty. I will make them again. Although tasty, we do not eat french fries, as they are not healthy.
