Pin ItApple Crisp is one of my favorite fall desserts. I actually prefer it over apple pie because it is so easy to make, you don’t have to fuss with rolling out pie crust and the crisp topping is incredible! This rustic apple dessert is simply delicious! My family requests it every fall and I am always happy to make it for them:)
Fresh, sugary apple slices are covered with a buttery cinnamon oat topping that is oh so delicious! Bake until bubbly and serve warm with vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of salted caramel sauce. So cozy and delicious!
I love that this apple crisp recipe uses up lots of apples. It is the perfect dessert to make for fall parties, Halloween, Thanksgiving, or after a day of apple picking. Everyone loves this easy fall dessert!

Ingredients
- Flour– use all-purpose flour. To make gluten-free apple crisp, you can use all-purpose gluten-free flour.
- Oats– use old-fashioned oats.
- Sugar– brown sugar and granulated sugar.
- Cinnamon– apples and cinnamon are a match made in heaven.
- Salt– to enhance all of the flavors.
- Unsalted Butter– use cold butter that is cut into tablespoon pieces.
- Apples– you will need about 10 cups of sliced and peeled apples, which is about 8 medium apples. I like to use Granny Smith or Honey Crisp apples. Choose apples that are crisp and not mushy. This tool is great for peeling, slicing, and coring apples. I also love this apple slicer.
- Lemon juice– a little lemon juice will prevent the apple slices from browning.
- Vanilla extract– always use pure vanilla extract.
- Corn starch– to help thicken the filling.
How to Make Apple Crisp
*Scroll down for the full list of ingredients and instructions!*
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9×13- inch baking pan with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside.
- First, make the apple crisp topping. In a medium bowl, combine flour, oats, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
- Mix in the cold butter pieces with your fingers or a pastry cutter until it comes together and large clumps form. Set the topping aside. If it is warm in your house, you can put the topping in the refrigerator while you prepare the filling.
- In a large bowl, combine the apple slices, lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and corn starch.
- Stir until the apples are well coated.
- Pour the apple mixture evenly into the prepared pan.
- Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples. Bake for 45 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are soft and bubbling around the edges.
- Let the crisp cool for 10 minutes. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream, if desired. You can also drizzle a little salted caramel sauce over the top. YUM!
How to Store & Reheat
- Let the apple crisp cool completely. Cover and store in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
- To reheat, place the pan in the a 350 degree F oven for 20 minutes or until heated through. If the top is browning too quickly, tent loosely with aluminum foil.
- You can also reheat individual servings in the microwave.
How to Freeze
- If you want to freeze apple crisp, I recommend freezing it unbaked so that it doesn’t get mushy and so the topping doesn’t get over browned. Assemble the crisp in an aluminum pan or freezer safe baking dish. Wrap it in a layer of plastic wrap and a layer of aluminum foil. Label and date. Freeze for up to 3 months.
- To bake a frozen apple crisp, remove the crisp from the freezer and remove the plastic wrap and foil, replace foil.
- Bake covered in 350 degree F oven for 20 minutes, then remove foil and bake for an additional 40 to 50 minutes or until crisp topping is golden brown and filling is bubbling. Remove from oven and let cool 10 minutes before serving.
