Apple Coffee Crumb Cake with Brown Sugar Glaze Recipe on twopeasandtheirpod.com

We aren’t traveling for Christmas this year because my family is coming to us. Yay! We are already counting down the days. Everyone will be at our house on Christmas morning for brunch and to see what Santa left them under the tree:) I am starting to plan the Christmas brunch menu and I think this Apple Coffee Crumb Cake with Brown Sugar Glaze will have to make an appearance. It is easy to make, I bet you have all of the ingredients in your pantry right now, and it is a real crowd pleaser. The best kind of cake!

Apple Coffee Crumb Cake with Brown Sugar Glaze Recipe on twopeasandtheirpod.com This cake is SO good!

I love that coffee cake is acceptable for breakfast and brunch. Starting your day with dessert is always a good idea, especially on a holiday:) This cake is loaded with apple chunks so it is somewhat healthy, right? ๐Ÿ™‚ I love anything with a crumb or streusel topping and this cake has a thick crumb topping made of butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon. The flavors go perfectly with the moist apple cake.

The cake is wonderful with just the crumb topping, but why stop there? It also has a brown sugar glaze, which makes the cake extra special. I like to drizzle each piece with the glaze, right before serving. I can’t wait until Christmas to see my family…and to eat this cake. It is going to be a wonderful addition to our Christmas morning brunch.

Instructions

  • 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease a 13 by 9-inch glass baking dish and set aside.
  • 2. In a large bowl, cream together butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating after the addition of each. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt. Add to the wet ingredients, alternating with the sour cream and vanilla. Fold in the apples. Pour into the prepared baking dish, spreading out to the edges.
  • 3. To make the topping, in a bowl, combine the sugar, flour, cinnamon, and butter, and mix until it resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle the topping over the cake and bake until golden brown and set, 35 to 40 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes.
  • 4. To make the glaze, in a bowl, combine the sugar, vanilla, and water and mix until smooth. Drizzle the cake with the glaze and let harden slightly. Cut into squares and serve.

  1. In my opinion, coffee cake doesn’t make ENOUGH of an appearance in my life. Especially covered in caramel sauce! Yum.

  2. You always post such beautiful Photos! I love them! This looks really good, and I feel like it will make an appearance in my kitchen soon!

  3. i just found your blog , I think from Erica of Itzys Kitchen. I LOVE it! This recipe especially, my goodness, looks fabulous. I’m totally with you as well, I love anything with stresseul topping the crumbly, buttery, brown sugar is to die for.

Congrats on getting your family to drive to you, hahaha.

  4. How funny! I ran across your site through Pinterest and started looking at all your recipes. I see this one for the apple coffee cake and am intregued. I click on it and it’s the same recipe from the Food Network that I found and made for my husband, a huge apple lover, for our Christmas brunch with his family. He LOVES this recipe. Me, not so much. Too much brown sugar. I like my coffee cake a little fluffier, like the recipe that used to be on the back/side of the Krusteaz or Bisquick box. But what I do to spice it up a bit is add a splash of Bailey’s to the batter or just replace the vanilla with Baileys. Then I replace the water in the glaze with Baileys. It really kicks it up a notch! Love your site!

  5. loved this recipe from the first time i made the cake ! then experimented with it, adding dates to the cake bater one time, and another adding crushed pecans to the crumble topping…. and each time the cake turned out delicious as ever!

  6. I’m looking to make this on Saturday and was wondering what kind of apples you used. This looks so delicious :)! Thanks!

    1. We usually use Granny Smith. Honeycrisp are good too, but hard to find when it’s not apple season. Enjoy!

  7. Thank you for your responding to my question. I made this cake this weekend and it was amazing!!! The cake itself is so delicious, and when you add the crumble and glaze it’s perfection! I will definitely make this again :)!

  8. I dug up an old recipe that was my tried and true for apple cake, but the handwriting was faded and the card torn, so I turned to your site. Ive tried many of your recipes and haven’t found a clunker yet. Thank you for another great recipe!

  9. I have had this printed for a couple of years now and I finally made it over the weekend! It was delicious! I made it in a smaller pan (9×9 square) and it took much longer to bake. I just kept adding 10 minutes until a toothpick came out clean. My family loved it! I think next time I will add an extra apple, that fits our taste. Thank you for sharing another yummy recipe!

  10. made this tonight! i replaced half of the flour with whole-wheat flour, and i threw in some chopped walnuts. very moist and flavorful, and i didn’t use the glaze. definitely a keeper! thanks!
