Whole Wheat Toasted Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies
Updated March 26, 2019
Whole Wheat Toasted Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies-the toasted oats and whole wheat flour add a slight nutty flavor to these oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. They are a favorite at our house!
People always want to know what my favorite cookie is. I can never answer that question. It stumps me every time. We have close to 200 cookie recipes on my site and I love them all. I can’t imagine picking a favorite. I try to narrow it down and usually say a cookie with oatmeal. I have several favorite oatmeal cookie recipes so it really isn’t picking a favorite, but close enough:) I just love the texture and flavor oatmeal adds to cookies.
My new favorite cookie, for the moment, it will change tomorrow, is my Whole Wheat Toasted Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies. Again, I love oatmeal in my cookies and the toasted oatmeal makes these cookies extra special.
The secret to these cookies is toasting the oatmeal before stirring it into the cookie batter. To toast the oats, I spread the oats on a baking sheet and bake for about 10 minutes until the oats are slightly golden and have a nutty aroma. I let the oats cool while I whip up the cookie dough.
To enhance the toasted flavor, I also use white whole wheat flour. Whole wheat flour gives the cookies a little nutty texture that goes great with the toasted oats.
The chocolate chips are the finishing touch to my Whole Wheat Toasted Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies. Chocolate is always a good idea! I love biting into my cookie and getting a burst of chocolate. These cookies have it all!
If you are searching for your favorite cookie recipe, give my Whole Wheat Toasted Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies a try! Maybe they will be your favorite? They are my favorite…for today anyways:)

Beautiful cookies 🙂
Awesome looking cookies and they’re healthy – how convenient because I can never stop at just one 🙂 pinned
So, these just kicked my sweet tooth into high gear! They look super delicious and the fact that they have oats and whole wheat flour will not make me feel as bad when I eat 16 of them 🙂 great recipe!
I have been totally obsessing over coconut lately! And the fact that these are healthy and also include chocolate? Gimme those! Pinned!
Wow 200 cookie recipes?! I wouldn’t be able to pick a favorite, either. These look great. 🙂
Gorgeous! I’m going to make these soon
200 cookie recipes? Color me impressed 🙂
Maria,
My favorite chocolate chip cookie has oatmeal in it. I think it adds a bit of heartyness to it. Plus oatmeal is healthy – right?
Congrats on your TV debut. Have a great weekend.
Annamaria
Lovin’ these.
Wondering if I can substitute xylitol for the sugars to make them uber healthy?
Big into the xylitol scene =)
I haven’t tried it before, but let me know if it works for you!
Love the idea of toasting the oats first!!
Can you use regular flour? I don’t have wheat and don’t need to buy any flour at the moment, but want to make those cookies this weekend!
Is this a crisp cookie or a chewy cookie?
LOVE x10!!! One of my fav chocolate chip cookies recipes is very similar to this, except I grind the toasted oats up into flour. The texture is awesome 🙂
What a nice cookie, love that you toast the coconut before and use white whole wheat flour. Lovely! Pinned!
Yum! These look so tasty
Great idea, I’ve never thought to toast my oatmeal for baking before! These look yummy!
These cookies look so soft, chocolaty and I bet delish dunked in a glass of milk!
oatmeal cookies are my favorite cookies and this recipe looks perfect! beautiful!!
have these in the oven right now! 🙂
Saw this recipe today and made a batch this evening for an event tomorrow. I think I’ll have to make another batch because my family of five has already eaten half of them! Some oatmeal cookies have that raw, gummy oatmeal flavor. Toasting the oatmeal gets rid of that and adds a depth of favor that is awesome. Who knew?! And, they seem pretty healthy, what with the whole wheat flour and oatmeal. This recipe is a keeper!
Wow I love cookies with oats and whole wheat flour! Lovely looking cookies!
A not too sweet cookie and truly additive. I made these this morning and my husband and I are enjoying. I love the toasting of the oats. I toasted extra and used them in and on pumpkin muffins. Thanks for sharing.
These would be a great “breakfast” cookie-YUM! xo
I haven’t used toasted oatmeal yet. I am kind of loving these cookies without even trying them. I would totally call them healthy too since they have whole wheat flour and oatmeal. Healthy = justification of 2 or 3 cookies 🙂
These look delicious & I’ll make them soon. Coincidentally, yesterday on America’s Test Kitchen they made Oatmeal Muffing using oatmeal which is browned in a skillet with butter. You might like them too.
I make a lot of cookies also. BUT I don’t have 200 recipes! I just started looking at your site. Apparently I am going to have to do some deep cookie research. Lol.
I’m intrigued with this recipe with the toasted oatmeal. That would certainly pare well with the whole wheat flower. I love toasted ingredients because there is that special flavor which comes out with toasting. I am going to have to give these a try, if for no other reason than to beef up my cookie recipe list. Yum! Love the toasted oats in these!
These look amazing!
I love how thick and chewy these healthy cookies look! You were adorable on the Today Show by the way!
I always know where to go when I want a good cookie recipe. This looks SO good!
I was finally able to use my big thing of whole wheat flour that was just sitting in my cupboard! Great cookies, loved the toasted oats, yum, yum!
Made these cookies today. So good. Will be making these often.
The recipe is awesome. I have also made chocolate chip cookies , but without oats. I got that recipe from Nestle. First you mix butter and sugar until creamy and then and cream to it. Then add vanilla and self raising flour. Then add dark and white chocolate chips and bake it.
These cookies are delicious and taste so rich and wonderful even though they only have that 1/2 a cup of butter. Also the whole wheat flour really adds a great difference to your traditional cookie taste!
Took a picture of them and shared them and they got a lot of love on Instagram 🙂
As always, thanks for the inspiration!
Toasted oatmeal, sounds delicious! Question, would it be better to use whole wheat flour or AP flour instead of the white whole wheat flour? Hoping I don’t need to buy another flour just to make these cookies!
I just breezed over that “let cool” part on the oats, um don’t do that. It made for a mess of melted chocolate goo. Aside from that little blunder, I loved the toasted oats! I personally ended up adding more oats as we love them. Thanks for the recipe!
making them right now
Yummy. I just made these replacing all sugar for coconut sugar. Came out delish.
hi,recipe is so healthy, feel less guilty.can i prepare the dough nd keep it in the fridge and bake them a few hours later?
Just made these…. amazing and so easy. My new favorite cookie!
