Ingredients
- Refried beans– you can use homemade refried beans or your favorite canned refried beans.
- Salsa– I like to use our easy blender salsa, but you can use your favorite salsa. Mixing the salsa with the refried beans gives the beans great flavor and makes them easier to mix!
- Taco seasoning– I recommend using our homemade tacos seasoning. I always keep it in the pantry! Add the seasoning to the bean layer and sour cream layer for extra flavor.
- Guacamole– the guacamole layer is my favorite!
- Plain Greek Yogurt or Sour Cream– I use plain Greek yogurt because I like the boost of protein and I always have it in my fridge. Sour cream works well too.
- Shredded Cheddar Cheese– you’ve gotta have a layer of cheese!
- Tomatoes– ripe red tomatoes are the perfect topping!
- Black olives– sliced!
- Green onions– sliced!
- Cilantro– so fresh!
- Tortilla chips– for serving! I am currently obsessed with these chips, these are good too! Or make your own homemade tortilla chips!
How to Make 7 Layer Dip
- In a medium bowl, combine the refried beans, salsa, and 1 ½ tablespoons taco seasoning. Spread the mixture on the bottom of an 8×8-inch baking dish.
- Spread the guacamole over the beans, in an even layer.
- In a small bowl, combine the Greek yogurt or sour cream with the remaining taco seasoning.
- Spread the sour cream mixture over the guacamole. Be sure to go all the way to the edges of the dish to cover the guacamole to prevent it from browning.
- Sprinkle evenly with shredded cheese.
- Top with tomatoes, black olives, green onions, and cilantro.
- Cover and store in the refrigerator until ready serve. Serve with tortilla chips.
Variations
- If you like spicy, you can use spicy salsa or add a few dashes of hot sauce to the Greek yogurt/sour cream layer.
- If you don’t want to make guacamole, you can mash up ripe avocados and season with salt and lime juice. That layer won’t have as much flavor, but still good.
- Instead of cheddar cheese, use monterey jack, pepper jack, or Mexican blend cheese.
- If you want an extra flavor boost, top with pico de gallo instead of plain diced tomatoes.
- If you don’t like olives, you can leave them off.
- Add a layer of finely shredded lettuce.
- Top with pickled red onions or jalapeño slices!
Is 7 Layer Dip Served Hot or Cold?
7 layer dip should be served cold. It might sound odd, but I promise it’s SO good. You don’t want to heat up this dip because of the sour cream (Greek yogurt) and guacamole. If you are looking for a hot dip, try my Best Bean Dip.
How Long Does 7 Layer Dip Last?
7 layer dip is best the day it is made, but if you have leftover dip you can cover it tightly and store it in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. It might get a little watery the longer it sits.
